NLP is a life coaching skill that up until now has been mostly used at work. Now, thanks to Judy Bartkowiak author of Be a happier parent with NLP and a whole series of NLP workbooks in the Engaging NLP series, parents, children, teenagers, teachers, new mums and mums returning to work can benefit from the principles of NLP.

Just imagine if you believed ‘there’s no failure only feedback’? How great would that be?! Or if you really believed you have all the resources you need?

What if you could get your kids to do what you wanted them to do by changing the words you use?

Imagine being able to separate yourself from the emotional response and feel like an adult again?

This book is full of examples, quizes, tips and ideas based on Judy’s own family from tots to teens and the many children and parents she has counselled or taught over the years.

For Parents

     06 Dec 11

As any mum or dad will testify, getting a young child into a regular sleep pattern is the holy grail of parenting.  Even once they are settled for the night there can be many nocturnal awakenings commonly associated with hunger, nappy changes and fluctuations in temperature.

During the winter months the drop in temperature during the wee small hours is often the main culprit for waking little ones from their much needed slumber.

Glasgow based parents Gavin and Kelly Cruickshank know only too well the trial and tribulations of getting their three young children to sleep.  The Cruickshank’s have developed the innovative new Sunbuster blackout blind which as well as being safe (it has no looped cords) and easy to fit (it simply sticks to the glass), also has the added benefit of insulating the window thus making the room warmer.

University testing has proven that the Sunbuster blackout blind increases air temperature around the window by a massive six degrees.

Gavin explains “We developed the Sunbuster in early 2011 prior to the summer time when the long daylight hours can be the main culprit for keeping little ones awake.  We designed the Sunbuster blind using a fleeced lined thermal blackout fabric which has been university tested to provide a six degree thermal gain which helps prevent night time chills whilst reducing fuel costs.”

The Sunbuster blackout blind adheres directly to the glass using a non-residue gel, which means that there are no gaps where light can penetrate. Magnetic strips hold the blind in raised or lowered position, removing the need for hazardous looped blind cords associated with child fatalities – tragically six children were fatally injured by looped blind cords in 2010 alone

TJS Innovations picked up a highly commended award from the prestigious John Logie Baird awards panel for the Sunbuster blackout blind in March 2011.

Thermal Image

On the thermal insulation image, you can see that the left hand side of the window is covered by the Sunbuster blind and the right hand section (the blue part) is uncovered, the difference in surface temperature is around 6 degrees.

–       Research Reveals Socialising with Girls Helps Boys Learn Essential Soft Skills

–       Girls Who Enjoy Mixed Gender Play Have Better Spatial Abilities

–       LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre Invites Girls to Beat the Boys at Their Own Game and Join Their Junior Construction Panel

It’s bad news for little lads everywhere…

While boys might prefer playing with their friends than the fairer sex, experts say socialising with girls is good for their health and future prospects.

A new report by leading child psychologist, Pat Spungin, analyses the way children play together and reveals that young males who mix with females have more chance of developing the soft skills modern society prizes.

The research, commissioned by LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, Manchester, reveals playing with girls can have a positive effect on boys’ learning; enabling them to perform better at school and work.

Dr Spungin, a leading commentator on child development in the UK, found mixed sex socialising had advantages for females too – helping them acquire more traditionally ‘male’ skills like heightened spatial abilities and awareness.

Her work documents the way genetic patterning and learned behaviours combine to create what we view as male and female play.

These ways of enjoying toys dictate how and what the sexes learn – defining future roles and capabilities.

Dr Spungin highlights research into the brain activity of children as young as three months, showing how males and females are primed to enjoy and tackle different tasks.

So while boys build towers and bridges, boosting their spatial, logic and maths skills, girls like dollies and make-believe, leading to a more advanced sense of empathy and language.

Mixing the two has positive results for everyone and she is advising parents and teachers to look at less segregated play times.

As she says: “What humans inherit is just a starting point. It’s the interaction of nature and nurture that makes us what we are.”

“When different sexes play together then each is able to learn from the other be quite creative as a result.”

“Girls build up their spatial skills and boys their social and emotional skills while both are having a good time.”

Now bosses at the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre are hoping to put Dr Spungin’s theory to the test – by calling on girls to join their teams of budding builders.

The Trafford Centre attraction is looking for primary school children to become part of its existing Junior Construction Panel, currently made up of six to ten-year-old male LEGO® fans, and road-test its new collections and events.

An appeal was launched to find the team last year but despite region-wide media attention and thousands of entries, no girls applied.

Now bosses hope the new search will prompt a wider range of responses.

LEGOLAND Discovery Centres marketing manager Rachael Lockitt explains: “As Dr Spungin’s research shows it really is very important for boys to play alongside girls, as well as with their peers, and enjoying uni-sex toys like LEGO is a great way to do that.

“We’re looking forward to seeing what difference having male and female members will make to the feel of the Panel – and to seeing what the girls enjoy building the most.  We have plans to develop our product offering for girls and are keen to get our new Junior Construction Panel members on board ASAP to involve them in the process.  The boys will get involved too as we hope some of them will enjoy the new area as much as the girls.”

Budding model builders are asked to apply by submitting a photograph of their favourite LEGO model along with a 100 essay explaining what they would bring to the Junior Construction Panel.

Entries can be submitted by [email protected]  or posting images on the Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/LDCManchester) with their essay as the caption.  Essays should begin “XXX (insert name) would be the perfect addition to the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Junior Construction Panel because…”

Mix , Match and Learn

Dr Spungin’s Tips for Integrated Play

–       Give your children toys designed for the opposite sex

–       Encourage word-based activities for boys and spatial activities for girls

–       Don’t label toys as ‘for boys’ or ‘for girls’ and discourage your child from doing so too

–       Join in with opposite gender games – get dad to play with the dolls while mum tackles the train set

–       Set up mixed play sessions with friends or relatives

–       If you can’t find appropriate toys, write to the manufacturers and ask them why

Every Friday and Saturday over five consecutive weekends, starting in January, Davina McCall will be guiding new pairs of contestants as they face the daunting Drop in the hopes of taking home some seriously big money. And joining the latest pairs of contestants this series will be some familiar faces who will be playing for charity.

Contestants are given one million pounds at the top of the show; all they have to do is keep hold of it over eight tricky questions. Played out on The Drop, the possible answers to each question are displayed on four trapdoors, where one wrong answer can see thousands of pounds drop to the floor.

Last year saw some of the biggest wins in the show’s history with contestants Nick and Katie becoming The Million Pound Drop’s highest ever winners and the show’s first ever quarter-millionaires, plus celebrity pairing Jack Whitehall and his father Michael won a staggering £300,000 for their chosen charities.

Viewers at home can play with a virtual million pounds alongside the contestants with the hugely successful play along online game. This series players at home can also play against their own friends and other viewers.

The series was ordered by Entertainment Commissioner Syeda Irtizaali and will be Executive Produced by David Flynn, Tom Blakeson and Michelle Woods

10 Dec 11

Today, Saturday 10th December, Louis Walsh confirmed in The Times UK that he has had a hair transplant procedure.

Hair Restoration Blackrock (HRBR) can confirm that Louis Walsh was treated by Dr Maurice Collins. Dr Maurice Collins is founder and Medical Director of HRBR.

Dr Collins commented today – “Louis Walsh has decided to let it be known to the public that he has had a hair restoration procedure, carried out here at Hair Restoration Blackrock. Like James Nesbitt he has spoken about his hair surgery to try and encourage other men who have hair loss issues to seek proper advice regarding their concerns.

When Wayne Rooney made it known that he had hair transplant surgery carried out in the summer of this year, he did a huge amount to remove the stigma that was associated with hair loss and hair restoration surgery.

The general public frequently interpret hair transplantation as a cosmetic ‘vanity’ procedure. Nothing can be further from the truth as it brings about an improvement in self-esteem and self confidence, and also an inner contentment. To give you an idea of the extensiveness of hair loss, a few stats: 30% of men at 30 are affected, 40% at 40 and 50% at 50.

We would like to congratulate Louis Walsh on his ongoing success with the X Factor.”

HRBR is based in Blackrock Co. Dublin, Ireland, and is Europe’s only dedicated purpose built hair transplant clinic. Dr Collins consults in Dublin and London.

Hair Restoration Blackrock (www.hrbr.co.uk) is a specialist hair transplant clinic founded 8 years ago by Dr. Maurice Collins at the Blackrock Clinic in Dublin. Maurice Collins is an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon by training with 25 year experience at the Blackrock Clinic in ENT. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons London, Dublin and Edinburgh. His two surgeon colleagues are also fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons (UK and Ireland). In 2007 HRBR moved to a dedicated purpose built facility at Samson House in Dublin.

Dr Collins’ interest in hair transplant surgery started eight years ago. Dr Collins has trained and studied internationally in this specialist subject with some of the best experts in the world.  Dr Collins and his team regularly attend, and participate in, the annual conferences of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) and the European Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ESHRS).  Dr Collins contributes to the ISHRS Hair Transplant Forum International bi-monthly newsletter and was named ‘Surgeon of the Month’ in May/June 2007.

BP Portrait Award winner Stuart Pearson Wright turns his precision gaze and intricate brushwork to facial expressions for his second solo exhibition in the UK.

Keira Knightley, who collaborated with Pearson Wright on her debut art film ‘Maze’ (2010), appears in this new series of paintings. She’s posing, with one hand on her hip, but instead of the picture-perfect image that we are used to, there is a sinister yellow backlight thrown by the suburban buildings around her and mascara runs down her cheek.

These paintings consider the motif of the smile and its traditional role in the history of portraiture, as well as its use in advertising, popular culture and the mass media as a signifier of a successful life. Pearson Wright looks at the transformation which takes place both privately and publicly when a camera is pointed at a subject and what the artist describes as “the collective, hysterical conspiracy to appear happy [which] blights our visual world with endless images of overt disingenuousness”.

“Stuart Pearson Wright’s work is masterly and contemporary, as well as slightly unnerving and surreal”
Sarah Howgate, contemporary curator, National Portrait Gallery, London

Stuart Pearson Wright (b Northampton 1975) was the winner of the National Portrait Award (2001) aged just 26. He lives and works in London.

The murky underworld that lurks beneath top-flight football.

The ins and outs of top-flight football don’t come much more exciting than this.

Paul Breakwell may be a gifted player, but he lacks ambition and direction and looks as if he’s stuck in a Sunday parks team. That is until he meets Nigel, washed out, washed up and down on his luck – but with an eye for the game and the ability to spot potential. Once jailed for fraud, Nigel now rediscovers his own passion for the beautiful game while igniting Paul’s, and sets about making his discovery of football’s latest hot property.

For Paul and his wife Carly things seem to go from strength to strength – new jobs and exciting prospects with local on-the-up club Barrowcliffe, more money, a new car and an expensive big house in footballers’ row. It’s as though all their dreams have come true; but are things ever quite that good for real?

While they enjoy fast-paced football matches and a meteoric rise up the leagues, Paul, Carly and Nigel uncover scandal after seedy scandal underneath the club’s cover. What really goes on behind closed doors across the road at club owner Billy’s house? Why has former player Stan Page reared his ugly head again? And what do they do when the answers leave them fighting for their lives?

Leigh Rose, originally from Derby, combined a career as a PE teacher with roles at several top-flight football clubs, including coaching and scouting for Southampton, Reading and Derby County. He lives with his family in Belper, on the edge of the Peak District.

” ‘I wish I hadn’t worn mascara’, my companion remarked as she wiped away the tears as Dave Spikey left the stage. Immediately likeable and with spot on observations, there was certainly one word that came easy for the  audience.  ENCORE!” – Manchester Evening News

Double British Comedy Award winner Dave Spikey, who recently scooped an audience award at the inaugural COFILMIC Festival for his 10 minute short Buzz Dish, returns to the live arena in 2012 with the addition of 19 dates to his critically acclaimed Words ‘Don’t Come Easy’ tour. As anyone who has ever seen Dave Spikey live or read his best-selling autobiography Under the Microscope will know, words come very easily to this hugely popular comedian.

“Not only a very funny accomplished comedian, but one of the finest raconteurs around”  – Time Out

Inspired by the fantastic audience response to his deconstruction of song lyrics in his 2008/09 ‘Best Medicine Tour’, and his fascination with the vagaries of the English language, this hilarious show examines many of life’s situations where words really don’t come easy. These include tongue-tied parents explaining the facts of life, ridiculous newspaper stories, magazine poems, adolescent chat-up lines, weird hospital speak, learning a foreign language and an extended selection of song lyrics that range from the lazy through surreal to the ridiculous. Throw in a “Champion the Wonder Horse” sing-a-long, ancient Abyssinian contraception, rubbish school trips, Epidural Anaesthesia and The Last Supper and you have all the ingredients for a rich and spicy comedy casserole or as Dave would describe it “a sort of Lexicon-carne…. sorry!”

“Down to earth genius”  – Liverpool Echo

Since winning the nation’s hearts as cabaret star Jerry St Clair in Phoenix Nights, which he co-wrote with Peter Kay and Neil Fitzmaurice, Dave has been a regular on our TV screens as well as in theatres and comedy clubs around the UK. Aside from Phoenix Nights, Dave also wrote and starred in Dead Man Weds and Magnolia, hosted the new series of the TV classic Bullseye and is currently one of the regular hosts of the TV Book Club on Channel 4.

6 Easy Ways To Enjoy Christmas Without Piling On The Pounds!

6 Easy Ways To Enjoy Christmas Without Piling On The Pounds!

6 Easy Ways To Enjoy Christmas

Without Piling On The Pounds!

15 Dec 11

DECEMBER 2011: With calorie-laden food and drink available in copious amounts at every turn, Christmas can mean all that work done over the year to be ‘good’ can be undone in days and many people start the New Year feeling slightly depressed, slightly flabby & vowing to join a gym… again!

Wendy Powell, founder of the MUTU® SYSTEM (mutusystem.com), suggests bucking the trend this year and enjoying Christmas without the bloating, hangovers and extra pounds. Here’s how:

  1. Listen to your body when it tells you you’re full! Christmas dinner is notorious for leaving us so full & bloated we can’t move. One serving is a lovely treat, but two helpings takes you from full to bloated – sit back & digest instead!
  2. When did you ever order 2 desserts after a meal? Christmas pudding, Christmas cakes, trifles, chocolates, mince pies… just because we’re overwhelmed by choice it does mean we have to eat them all! You don’t need to refuse all sweet treats, but just taste them. How about a small plate with literally a bite-sized slice of each dessert you really fancy?
  3. When you do your food shopping for Christmas, don’t get sucked into this crazy notion that you have to fill your house with more ‘goodies’ than you’ve bought all year… for one day. Choose the treats your family really enjoy, but don’t get sucked in by all the ‘bumper-bargain-2for1-jumbo-family-pack-supersize’ nonsense.
  4. Move! Christmas for many families means sitting down! Take a break, get off the sofa and go for a walk, get some fresh air, run around with the kids and let off some steam, but don’t just sit and eat and watch TV!
  5. No one is saying don’t drink, but if you’re drinking alcohol, alternate alcoholic with non alcoholic drinks and try not to spend ALL day with a glass of wine in your hand! Ginger beer, tonic water with a slice of lime or juice like cranberry or pomegranate diluted with sparking mineral water are lovely alternatives and if you drink these you won’t wake up on Boxing Day feeling like a hamster spent the night in your mouth…
  6. Remember if you want to lose weight, or are planning a new regime for the New Year, piling on the pounds over Christmas makes it even harder. Don’t wait for January 1st to do some exercise! If you’re starting from scratch start a walk/run program TODAY!! Already started? Set yourself a small, achievable goal for the New Year – try a press up – go on! Do it now! How many can you do? Whatever it is – aim to double it by January 1st. Or pledge to make it running all the way up that hill without walking. Or holding a plank position for 1 full minute. You’ll be more motivated to eat well & keep going over Christmas if you’re already exercising, & by Jan 1st you’ll have a head start on your New Year’s Resolutions!

And of course, your friendly nagging personal trainer writer (that’ll be Wendy then) will be right here in January ready to put you through your paces! Happy Christmas!

Stressed-Out Britons Will Spend

Christmas On Their Smartphones

16 Dec 2011

Figures released this week show that almost half of work-obsessed Britons will be email watching over the festive period as the recession and eurozone chaos breeds a nation of Christmas neurotics.

A staggering forty six percent of the adult population so fear losing their job, that even over Christmas they will keep an eye on their emails. The survey* amongst 1000 people found that one in five people would feel competitively disadvantaged if they didn\’t keep on top of their emails this Christmas. Interestingly it is the younger workforce that feel the most pressure with 18-24 year olds most inclined to look at their emails, while the over 50s feel a little more inclined to relax and not worry about work.

Carole Spiers is the author of the new book \”Show Stress Who\’s Boss!\” and her advice for workers this Christmas is to take a break: \”If people dont re-charge their batteries over the bank holiday and use it as a time to switch off, they aren\’t going to be in a healthy state of mind to start the new year; which is no good for them, their family, or their employer.\”

Carole is available for comment or interview and extracts from her new book are available now. For more details please visit: www.showstresswhosboss.co.uk

Police warn householders with key safes

Police are warning people who use key safes to be cautious
after recent burglaries involving key safe break-ins.

Officers would like carers, relatives and neighbours to be extra vigilant as it is often older or less mobile people who use key safes to allow carers or family members access to their homes.

Superintendent Trevor Margenout, who leads Avon and Somerset’s fight against doorstep crime, said: “We would like people to be extra careful when using the safes.

“Make sure that if you are going to install one it is placed in a discreet location, so that it can’t be easily seen by passers by and they can’t see the combination being entered.”

A key safe is a secure metal box which can be secured next to your door. A single copy of your key/s are placed inside but can only be retrieved by someone who knows the correct code to open the box.

It is up to you who you give the code to and you can change the code as often as you like.

Units can be wall-mounted, have a locking shackle or be or attached to the top of a door and kept in place by closing the door.

If you are out…

• Always lock unattended windows and doors.
•Leave on a light or radio, or set timers
•Fit a security alarm
•Register your property at www.immobilise.com
•Download tracking software on to any items such as mobiles and laptops
•Look out for your neighbour – if you see anything suspicious in your neighbourhood, call 999 immediately. Otherwise call 101.
•Don’t leave packaging for expensive goods outside

If someone calls at your home…

•If you are not sure who is at your door and you are not expecting any visitors don’t open it.
•Have a safety chain fitted and always attach the chain before opening the door.
•Call a neighbour or friend nearby to come along and check out the caller before you open the door.
•Many service providers provide password schemes and it can be helpful to sign up to these. When unannounced callers knock at your doorthey should know the password if they are genuine.
•If somebody asks for your help, needs to make a telephone call, claims to have lost a ball in your garden, needs a drink or pen and paper, for example – don’t invite them into your house. If you really want to offer help, make them wait outside and while you are away from your door close and lock it. Alternatively call a friend or neighbour to come and assist.
•Remember it’s your doorstep, your decision.
