Platinum Nanotechnology has remarkable properties when it comes to direct skin cell repair and rejuvenation . It is certainly the most exciting technology to come to the cosmedical market because it is a proven medical technology that delivers drugs and cell-engineering formulas directly to individual skin cells. Until now even the most advanced anti-wrinkle creams have been limited by their ability to penetrate the outer layers of the skin.
Our ‘Platinum Colloid” is engineered to maximise the repair of damaged skin cells in a different way to any other product… and we have formulated our latest cream to benefit all skin types through applying multiple advanced technologies

CHILLING INGREDIENT IN WRINKLE FREEZE CREAM
SNAKE VENOM VERSUS BOTOX ?
Whilst putting snake venom on your face may seem bizarre, Planet Skincare lives up to its reputation for ‘state of the art’ anti-aging technology in developing a product that “snake-like”, strikes at the very core of anti-aging…
Hiding its true colours under its innocuous name, Wrinkle Defence doubles as a unique anti-aging cream with fantastic, wrinkle freezing, Botox-like properties.
One of the key ingredients of Wrinkle Defence is Synake, an ingredient that mimics a protein found in the venom of the Temple Viper snake. Synake inhibits neuromuscular communication, blocking the message that the brain sends to the facial muscles and reducing mobility so that wrinkles do not continue to form.
“It visibly reduces wrinkles by 52% and has an up 82% smoothing effect on the skin”
Unlike Botox which takes affect almost immediately, Planet Skincare Wrinkle Defence has an accumulative effect with results seen after 10-15 days. Wrinkles are visibly reduced, and the skin is also left healthy and glowing with renewed hydration.
Syn-ake: Synthetic substance mimics snake venom activity…
In the form of a “wrinkle-killer” it is being used to help boost the self-confidence of both men and women. Syn-ake is a synthetic substance, which mimics part of a polypeptide found in the venom of the Temple Viper. It has beneficial effects for the skin – perhaps “Love at first bite? Snake venom can be deadly – but similar substances can also heal!!
Lines caused by facial expressions are always visible. We use about 60 facial muscles whilst communicating both through speech and with facial expressions, frowning, the lifting of eyebrows laughing and pulling a face are some typical facial expressions that we use to communicate. As time passes and with frequent use of these facial movements, these wrinkles persist and become permanent deep wrinkles on the forehead, laughter lines and crow’s feet. Those who no longer want to live with these can now spare themselves the danger and discomfort of cosmetic surgery or the use of expensive botox injections…
A True Alternative to Botox™
Like Botox™, certain Planet Skincare ingredients blocks neuro-transmuscular contractions which cause facial tension.
Visibly reduce Lines & Wrinkles in just 28 days!
Powerful antioxidants that help skin cells remain healthy and protect against ageing
52% Wrinkle Reduction
82% Smoothing Effect
Rejuvenates collagen in the skin
Provides essential skin nutrients
Free of parabens that can dry or irritate skin
Not tested on Animals
Allergy Tested
Planet Skincare is one of the only anti-ageing products currently available on the market with a 52% reduction in lines and wrinkles. It is also currently one of the only brands to use maximum levels of Syn-ake in its product range

Of Captain Crow’s Teeth –
The Perfect Easter Treat
For All The Family
15 Mar 12
The Unicorn’s opening production of the new season explodes into glorious theatrical life with this imaginatively staged, spine-tingling romp for the whole family. Based on the novel from the popular best-selling children’s author Eoin Colfer, creator of the Artemis Fowl series, The Legend of Captain Crow’s Teeth is a funny and lively adventure of ghostly pirates, sibling rivalry and terrifying junior discos, directed and devised by Matthew Lenton.

Legend has it that when the sea glows at night, the ghostly pirate haunts the shore searching for a new cabin boy. Is it just another one of Marty’s tall tales or is Crow out to get him?
Award-winning Matthew Lenton directs his dramatisation of this classic children’s story. Lenton is the Artistic Director of Vanishing Point, a company highly praised for its theatrically visual style.
His credits include Interiors (Tramway, Glasgow and International Tour), Saturday Night (Traverse/Lisbon) Subway (Traverse/Tron/Lyric Hammersmith),The Beggar’s Opera (Royal Lyceum and Belgrade Coventry) and Little Otik (Glasgow Citizens’ and National Theatre Scotland).

BRIGHTON’S AVT CONNECT PROVIDE HIGH IMPACT AWARDS PRODUCTION
On Wednesday 08th February the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers Building Performance Awards were attended by over 750 industry peers in the sumptuous surroundings of the Great Room in London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.
The CIBSE Building Performance Awards recognise, reward and celebrate the best performance, innovation and practice in design, commissioning, construction, installation and operation of sustainable buildings and the manufacturers whose technologies enable energy efficiency.
Organised by Redactive Media Group, the awards were once again produced by AVT Connect and the evening was presented by Huw Edwards who helped make this years’ event a night to remember.
For creative and logistical reasons AVT Connect made the decision to a digital media server which enables multi-layer projection of a dynamic video background onto an ultra-wide screen. Programmable and customisable sequences were used to open the show, introduce awards and provided simple but highly impactful integration between lighting and video.
Using layered video to create content for awards offers huge flexibility, enabling production teams to overcome challenges such as late amends and running order changes. AVT were able to give fast turnarounds and ease of content management ensured that the hard work and contribution of CIBSE supporters and members was highlighted to the full.
This month, as well as producing the CIBSE awards AVT Connect are also producing a conference for Southern Railway at the Grand Hotel, Brighton and providing event production services at the launch night of the Brighton Festival at the Brighton Dome.

Stressbusting Tips For
2012 From Medical
Herbalist Lucy Stephens
19 Dec 11
Stress is one of the most common and damaging ailments of modern life and medical herbalist Lucy Stephens of London’s Reva Clinic (www.revaclinic.com) has some great natural Stressbusting Tips to reduce your daily stress. “We all need some stress – it’s what motivates us and allows us to get things done but too much stress can cause problems with our health, relationships and work. Some simple, natural remedies can improve your health and help beat some of the negative side effects of the condition such as digestion problems, mood swings, anxiety, poor concentration, headaches, muscle aches, dizziness and dry mouth.” says Lucy.
Lucy has put together some easy to follow advice that can help with managing our stress levels – the herb preparations are available through most health food stores and are easy to obtain:
Sleep soundly – often when you’re stressed it can affect your sleep patterns – you may have problems getting off to sleep or you wake in the early hours with a ‘to do’ list whirring round in your head. Having a clear wind-down period before you get into bed can be useful. Half an hour before your normal bedtime try switching off all electricals – your phone, the television, the laptop. Run a nice warm bath, add a couple of drops of lavender essential oil, dim the lights and soak away the stresses of the day. Lavender has been shown in many sleep studies to have sedative and relaxing properties. Follow this with a cup of chamomile tea – if you are using teabags try using 2 to one cup of hot water. Chamomile has been shown to have anti-anxiety as well as sedative effects, so it can be very useful at calming the mind ready for sleep.
Relax your tight muscles – sitting at your desk for long hours or just the pressure of deadlines can cause muscle tension in your neck and shoulders. Try adding 1 drop of rosemary essential oil to a base cream and massage it into your neck and shoulders. Rosemary is a good muscle relaxant that is used traditionally for sprains and bruises, but it has also been shown to be a stimulant for the central nervous system, so it will help you to concentrate better and improve alertness.
Breathe deeply – rapid, shallow breaths are a common sign of stress, particularly if we’re hunched over a computer. If you start to feel yourself getting angry, irritable, or anxious (all common signs of stress) try some calming breathing. Sit up in your chair, close your eyes and take a deep breath in for a count of 5 and then out again for a count of 7. Repeat this 5 times. You could also try inhaling an essential oil such as lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) as you take your deep breaths in. Lemon balm is good for calming the mind, relaxing and is uplifting for your mood.
Anxiety relief – our bodies all need a little help from time to time to get them back in balance. You might find work pressure is getting too much, or you just need a little support to get you through a tough period. Herbs such as Passiflora incarnata (passionflower), Valerian officinalis, Scutellaria lateriflora have been shown in many studies to be effective anti-anxiety herbs, as well as useful for insomnia.

Nourish Your Skin with
Natures Inspiration’s
Rose Cleanser
30 Dec 11
Natures Inspiration’s Founder Shauna Gallagher who also developed the entire range of natural handmade products says “it really is one of those products once you’ve used it you don’t want to use anything else, it leaves your skin feeling so soft and nourished!”
The ingredients are kept to a minimum – so great for those with sensitive skin, or those just seeking a pure and uncomplicated range. The cost of the range is excellent too, very affordable.
Customer Comments..
I really love Natures Inspirations products. My skin is really sensitive and I can use the products without any problems, in fact my skin feels great after using them. The rose cleanser is wonderful, it really cleans my skin with out drying it out, and it smells fabuluous. Fionna Martin (2nd August 2011)
The scent of the cleanser is truly amazing, and what you might expect from a product containing Rose Damascena. The cleanser has a lovely light creamy texture, and is so gentle on the skin. I felt an amazing tingle that comes from cleansers that work deep down into the pores of the skin, and I felt no dryness whatsoever following useage, nor any sensitivity. I did not have to use tiny amounts for fear of reactions due to having tiny patches of sensitive skin. Sarah (9th November 2011)

Europe To Go Ex-Growth
In 2012
22 Dec 11
Updated forecasts by the leading economists Cebr show world growth falling to 2.5% in 2012, a downward revision from the forecast made in September. And Cebr have prepared a risk scenario ‘if the politicians fail to fix the problems of the Euro’ which would lead to ‘one or more countries leaving the Euro, sovereign defaults and banks going bust and needing to be bailed out’ which would reduce global growth in 2012 to 1.1%.
The European growth slowdown is forecast to be even more marked, with a fall in GDP by 0.6% in 2012 and a possible fall if the Euro fails to be saved of 2.0%.
The forecast for the US is better than for Europe, with growth of 1.8% in 2012.
The bulk of the economic growth that is likely to take place next year will be in the emerging economies. China is forecast to grow by 7.6% and India by 6.0%. But other recent star economies are likely to face an economic slowdown with Turkish growth slowing to 2.5% from 7.1% this year; Saudi Arabia at 4.0% after 6.1% this year; Russia 2.8% after 3.8% this year; and Brazil 2.5% after 2.8% this year.
The knock on effect of continued sluggish demand growth is that oil and commodity prices are likely to be weaker than previously assumed. Cebr now forecast that the price of oil (weighted average of Brent Crude, West Texas Intermediate and Dubai Fateh) will fall to $86 in 2012 compared with an average of $103 in 2011. The commodity price index is forecast to fall by 10% in 2012.
“The world economy will not be in technical recession because even on our more pessimistic scenario we still expect positive growth” comments Douglas McWilliams, Cebr’s Chief Executive and co-author of the report. “But the slowdown we are expecting will be a sort of double dip, and of course significant parts of the world are likely to be in recession – much of Europe for example.”

Upwards Revision To Q3
UK Economic Growth,
But Q4 Is Likely To Be Weak
22 Dec 11
The Office for National Statistics unpacked a Christmas gift for the British economy this morning. It revised the previous estimates of GDP growth in Q3 2011 up to 0.6% from 0.5% quarter-on-quarter growth.
From a production side, the UK owes its growth to services, while manufacturing is stalling. Household incomes rose slightly (0.3% q/q), but most of this was put away as the savings ratio increased from 6.4% in Q2 2011 to 6.6% in Q3. Households are thus keeping up their debt reduction efforts, mirroring the public sector. In this environment of general deleveraging, strong growth is out of the question.
Compared to the third quarter of 2010, GDP is only up by a lacklustre half a percentage point. The disappointing performance of the UK economy becomes even clearer when considering that output was 3.8% lower in Q3 2011 than at the pre-crisis peak in Q1 2008. A alternative definition of recovery from a recession is that the recession is over when the economy has reached its previous peak level of output. We estimate that it will take until the first quarter of 2015 for output to climb back to this level. In other words, after three and a half years the UK has only reached the middle of its seven lean years that follow the fat financial boom years.
In this light, the bleak economic indicators released over the past year are less surprising. Unemployment has climbed to 8.3%, manufacturing has contracted and the housing market is stagnant. Also, a 1% year-on-year increase in general government consumption shows that public spending cuts have barely started despite heavy job cuts.
For the last quarter of the year, we expect a fall in output, while next year is forecast to see slow growth similar to the overall performance of 2011. Government will continue to pursue its course of deficit reduction while the Bank of England supports the economy with further quantitative easing.

The Changing Face of Estate Agency
29 Dec 11
Traditional estate agency is making way for lower cost, localised sales and lettings franchises, says property and lettings expert Sussanne Chambers, managing director of HomeXperts.
The New Year is started and this is always a time for reflection, as the trends of the past year are analysed and ‘experts’ try to take a best guess at what the next year will bring.
Ten years ago, who would have predicted that social networking websites, such as Twitter, Facebook and Youtube would be so massive? Now even estate agents have their own social networking websites: Ageants and Juicy Red Apple!
As social changes happen all around us the face of housing and estate agency has also changed dramatically during the past five years. Renting a house has become the solution for many people as more transient, chaotic lifestyles make the flexibility to move more important. Young people struggle to get onto the bottom rung of the housing ladder as financial institutions continue with tight lending criteria. During the past ten years there has also been a dramatic improvement in standards of rented homes in the UK in the wake of the Housing Act 2004. Currently 16% of properties in the UK are currently privately let and this figure is expected to rise to 20% over the next ten years.
The credit crunch and continuing problems within the property sector have seen estate agents in their droves closing their doors. But what statistics do not show is the number of satellite branches which have been closed as traditional High Street Agents batten down the hatches and cut costs in an effort to fight the effects of tougher financial times, fewer instructions and reduced commissions.
This reduction of localised agents across the UK has left a gap in the market for a new breed of estate and letting agent. The past year has seen a number of new personal agents start to gain share of the market, filling the space left by the vacating traditional agent. These businesses, which have been set up during the credit crunch with low overheads, often have the owner working from a low-cost, non high street office or at home.
This new breed of self-employed letting and estate agents seems to be a hit with landlords and vendors. Today’s vendor or landlord does not want to deal with the ‘Saturday Girl’ who may not be able to answer even the simplest questions. Discerning vendors want to deal with the business owner who delivers outstanding service levels, is knowledgeable about the local market and personally motivated to sell or let their house.
As the new year starts many employed and unemployed people will be thinking of branching out and setting up their own business; but how can they minimise the considerable start-up risks? For new businesses the figures do not read well – the CBI states that 90% of new businesses fail within the first five years. In contrast, statistics show that if the new business is a franchise, the figures are reversed: 90% of new franchise businesses succeed. The franchise sector has remained remarkably buoyant throughout the downturn. Statistics from the British Franchise Association (BFA) show that nine out of 10 franchises remained profitable throughout the recession.
During 2011 Nat West launched a £100 million franchise fund and Peter Ibbetson, chairman of small business for NatWest and RBS says: “Everybody wants to see banks funding business growth, as well as helping new businesses get off the ground to create jobs – this is exactly what this fund will deliver. The industry has shown itself to be virtually recession-proof, so for the many people left out of work by the recession franchising is a great way to start up a business – plus they get the support of a big brand behind them.”
Recession-proof is right. At the height of the economic downturn, the franchise industry’s turnover increased to £11.8 billion – with 94% of franchisors optimistic about the future. The franchise model is a low-risk, straightforward route to running a business – especially attractive to first-time entrepreneurs. And, interestingly, more women are now choosing franchising as a means to take the leap into enterprise. The BFA’s annual survey shows the number of female franchisees increased by 86% in the last seven years.
If property interests you there are many property franchises to choose from and the first decision you need to make is do you want to do sales and letting, or just one discipline? Xperience has 80 agency branches in the UK, operating under the 4 brandsof Ellis &Co, CJ Hole, Parkers and Whitegates. One of the largest lettings franchises is Belvoir, with over 200 franchises across the UK under. This franchise offers lettings from a High Street Office location. Their initial franchise fee includes business planning, training and development, support and marketing.
But one of the new breeds of estate agency franchises to emerge most strongly during 2011 are home-based letting and estate agents HomeXperts.
Using the power of the Internet, delivering amazing service standards and using innovative marketing techniques, HomeXperts are recognised as the fastest growing property franchise in the UK. The local HomeXperts franchisee works in a highly localised territory, quickly becoming the expert for that area, offering an unparalleled service. While other property franchisees require large initial capital to start, with starting franchise fees of £22,000 up to £35,000 – the HomeXperts Franchise fee is £12,995 plus VAT.
Full training is given to National Federation of Property Professional standard, plus the allocation of a personal Support Manager at HomeXperts Central Office. This is continued with on-going support from the online members’ area at www.home-xperts.co.uk. This means that people who have not been in the industry previously can start their business and be operating in their local area within a month of finishing the training academy. The franchisee fee includes a set up for success pack which includes a local website, sales letting boards, marketing materials, Ipad and camera.
Why should you look into the opportunities of property franchising now? Well, things are on the move. Gross mortgage lending was an estimated £13.1 billion in October a 13% increase from £11.6 billion in October 2010, according to data published by the Council of Mortgage Lenders.
A recent study carried out by the Halifax has revealed that affordability of homes for first-time buyers is at its highest level for eight years. The First-Time Buyer Review calculates affordability based on prices lower than people on average earnings in a given area can pay. It was found that homes were affordable in 44 per cent of all local authority districts in Britain, the best result since 2003 and up from 42 per cent in 2010.
The signs of recovery of the property industry are all around us, giving this new breed of property professional the right market conditions to begin trading.
The New Year is the perfect time to make plans to change direction and start a new challenge!

Latest Touch Screen Technology
Takes Students Behind The Scenes
At The British Museum
20 Dec 11
An investment in new technology sees students swap printed handouts for tablet computers on study visits, thanks to unique partnership between the University of Leicester’s School of Museum Studies and the British Museum.
Photocopied handouts and clipboards may become a thing of the past on study visits with the University of Leicester’s School of Museum Studies. The School is embracing the latest tablet computer technologies to help students get the most out of off-site trips.
Dr Janet Marstine and Dr Ross Parry worked with British Museum staff to create an app that takes students on an interactive learning tour of the Museum’s exhibits and galleries. The application is hosted on hand-held tablet computers, and includes video interviews with key staff and curators at the Museum.
The programme is used on study visits to help students think about ethical issues in museums.
The new app allows students to independently explore the Museum whilst simultaneously benefiting from the expertise of British Museum staff. Thanks to a close partnership between the School of Museum Studies and the British Museum, Drs Marstine and Parry were able to call upon key Museum staff to contribute short videos to the project.
Dr Janet Marstine said: “When we go on study visits, the students want to look and experience the place, but they also want to be informed by what the experts have to say. It seemed ideal to have short, taped discussions about ethical issues by Museum staff – then students could bring the tablets with them, hear what the staff had to say, and analyse and engage in the evidence that they saw.”
The School has already taken a group of students to the British Museum to test-drive the new app, with hugely successful results. The students used the app to guide them around the Museum, and recorded their thoughts and impressions using the tablet’s camera function and word processor. Working electronically meant the students could easily share and discuss their work.
“We asked students to email in what they’d been working on by 10 o’clock the next day,” Dr Parry said. “Because they’d been working digitally, it was a lot easier. They were able to put together a presentation for the group by the next morning.”
Both the students and the Museum were impressed with the new app.
“When we did the feedback session the next day, the students were absolutely riveted by it,” Dr Marstine said. “They liked having the technology, working with it in a group, wandering around on their own and having independence to really experience the place.”
Dr Parry added: “The students didn’t blink when we gave the tablets out. For us to give those out five years ago, there would’ve been a lot of discussion about it: have we created a barrier, have we made something unnecessarily complicated, are we expecting the students to have a skill set that they may not have? But it was unremarkable for them. It was completely normal.”
Xerxes Mazda, Head of Learning, Volunteers and Audiences at the British Museum, said: “We are delighted with the result of this experiment, one of the fruits of the strong relationship that exists between the British Museum and the School of Museum studies at the University of Leicester, and the Museum’s drive to use digital technology in many of its public activities, whether with schools, adults, families or local community groups.”
The innovation is the latest in a series of high-tech learning methods implemented in the School of Museum Studies, after they moved to new premises two years ago. At the new site’s learning lab, students bring their laptops to class and can share their work on three flat-screen monitors and via the main overhead projector. Dr Parry also makes use of online video conferencing to allow experts to contribute to lessons via Skype.
Dr Parry said: “I was able to have someone ‘drop in’ for twenty minutes. They came up on Skype on one of the big screens, and we were able to interact with them and talk about what we were doing. We could link desktops and they showed us a few things they were working on. In the past you’d have to pay for someone to come in on the train and they’d wipe out the day.”
“We’ve done a number of things over the years to think about how technology can change the way we teach and can reframe the learning experience,” Dr Parry added.
The new app has proved so successful that the School is considering developing similar applications for other study visits.
“Now we’ve done it with the British Museum, it’s not impossible to think about how we could use this for other study visits,” Dr Parry said.
“There’s no reason why we can’t use the tablet as a way of negotiating a city, taking in six or seven different museums.”

Kineto Enhances Smart Wi-Fi Application
For Use In Public Wi-Fi Networks
21 Dec 11
Kineto Wireless, the key innovator and leading supplier of Smart Wi-Fi solutions for mobile operators, today announced it has added new capabilities to its Smart Wi-Fi Application that enhance the end user service experience when connected to public Wi-Fi networks, or hotspots.
Smart Wi-Fi is an application provided by mobile operators to their subscribers that enables all mobile services (e.g. voice, SMS, MMS, RCS) to be delivered over existing Wi-Fi networks. To date, operators have focused the use of Smart Wi-Fi on private Wi-Fi networks, such as those at subscriber homes and offices, as a way to address indoor coverage challenges as well as offload their macro network.
However, many mobile operators are now looking to also leverage public Wi-Fi networks to realize additional offload and performance benefits. According to the Wireless Broadband Alliance, 47% of mobile operators surveyed believed further adoption of public Wi-Fi was “either very important or crucial” and that the number of public Wi-Fi access points could increase more than 400% to 5.8 units worldwide by 2015.
In response to this demand, Kineto has added capabilities that improve the Smart Wi-Fi user experience when subscribers connect to public Wi-Fi networks. These new features include:
– Smart Connect – Frustrated smartphone users have learned the hard way that simply attaching to a Wi-Fi hotspot doesn’t necessarily mean they are given Internet access. Quite often, public Wi-Fi networks require additional log-on steps before providing full data connectivity. To address this challenge, Kineto has added a Smart Connect feature that assists users with accessing hotspots when additional log-on information is required.
– Smart Offload – Subscriber usage of public Wi-Fi networks is very different to usage of private Wi-Fi networks. For example, subscribers typically stay connected to home and office Wi-Fi networks for many hours at a time, while time spent connected to any given public network can be very brief. Performance of public and private Wi-Fi can also vary widely. Private Wi-Fi networks typically deliver very good and consistent performance, while public hotspot performance may not be as predictable.
To address these differences, Kineto has added Smart Offload capabilities that enable selective service offloading to specific Wi-Fi networks based on operator policy and subscriber preference. For example, a subscriber may choose to have all their services (e.g. voice, SMS, MMS, RCS-e, Internet) automatically offloaded to their home and office Wi-Fi network, but be asked what services they want offloaded each time they connect to a new public Wi-Fi network (e.g. all services, or just Internet access).
“To date, Kineto’s Smart Wi-Fi application has enabled mobile operators and subscribers to fully benefit from private Wi-Fi deployment at home and office,” said Ken Kolderup, chief marketing officer for Kineto. “With these new features, operators can now leverage Smart Wi-Fi to enhance the public Wi-Fi strategy as well.”
Smart Wi-Fi is available from leading mobile operators around the world, and the Smart Wi-Fi application is available for Android-based smartphones from leading handset manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, Huawei and ZTE.
About Kineto Wireless, Inc.
Kineto Wireless is the key innovator and leading supplier of Smart Wi-Fi solutions for mobile operators. The company’s solutions enable mobile operators to turn more than 200 million existing public and private Wi-Fi access points into seamless extensions of their mobile networks.
With Smart Wi-Fi, subscribers can receive all their mobile services over Wi-Fi instead of the macro network, boosting indoor coverage and improving the mobile data experience, while securely offloading the mobile network. The company’s Smart Wi-Fi products and services, based on the 3GPP GAN standard, have been deployed by mobile operators around the world. Kineto customers and partners include HTC, Huawei, LG Electronics, Motorola, Orange, RIM, Rogers Wireless, SFR, Samsung, T-Mobile and ZTE. Recite Helps Invate to Innovate
With New Web Accessibility
Solution For Disabled Users
21 Dec 11
An innovative North East business that allows dyslexic and sight impaired users to access the web with ease has signed up another regional success story as one of its newest clients.
Gateshead-based Recite, which offers a simple and cost-effective platform that can help users with certain disabilities to use internet sites, is working with Invate, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of specialist products for disabled people, to make its website fully accessible and compliant with government regulations.
“I love the fact that one of our first clients is a business that shares a similar market and outlook to ourselves,” said Ross Linnett, Founder and Managing Director of Recite. “Invate offers a full range of products to people with all types of disability. By using the Recite platform, more of those people will be able to go online, explore the site and order the products for themselves.”
Recite is an easy to use and cost-effective web based solution which provides a set of tools like text- to-speech to read websites out aloud, and adjustable text-only-view to make sites easier to read. The system offers a simple solution to the issue of meeting W3C guidelines, which stipulate that reasonable steps must be taken to make all websites universally accessible. Unlike traditional products, which require downloading and installing of software, Recite can be added using a simple line of code on the client’s website, providing a simple off-the-peg solution.
“As a company that caters to the needs of disabled people, we are always looking for ways to improve the customer experience and I have been hugely impressed by the capabilities of the Recite platform,” said Chris Quickfall, Managing Director of Newcastle-based Invate. “It has not only enhanced the usability of the site, but has also increased our accessibility for visually impaired customers.”
Recite is accessed by a simple button, prominently placed on the client’s website. Once the user clicks on this, a bar will appear at the top of the page giving access to the Recite tools, including magnified plain text view, text-to-speech capability and translation into 52 languages. It’s even possible to change the colour and layout of text to suit certain specific conditions.
“There are over nine million people within the UK who have dyslexia and there are a further 2 million that are registered with visual impairment, so we’ve put a lot of thought into the Recite product, making it simple and intuitive for both website owners and their customers,” added Mr Linnett. “It’s really easy to use, has an intuitive user interface and works on a simple yearly subscription model. When it comes to assistive technology, using Recite could change the lives of people with dyslexia or visual impairment.”

London’s First Free
Public Nightlife Concierge Service
23 Dec 11
Design my night is the UK’s first ever price comparison site for nightlife with a search for over 1,800 venues, launched by two former City professionals, Nick Telson and Andrew Webster.
In the current economic climate, consumers are having to be more and more savvy about the way they spend their money. The hospitality sector is today worth £46 billion to the UK economy* showing that despite the economic doom and gloom, consumers are placing a high value on having a good time.
However, with individuals feeling the squeeze from low wages and high inflation, it’s never been more important to plan your evening’s expenditure.
The most savvy savers are 23 – 29 year olds, with a massive 73 per cent of designmynight users falling into this age category. And women are more likely than men to plan ahead when it comes to spending on going out – 57 per cent of all users of the price comparison service are female.
Price comparison is becoming an integral part of consumers’ spending decisions in so many areas, including gas, electricity, insurance, flights and holidays – so it’s no wonder that designmynight is having huge interest from the public who are looking to save money or plan budgets on nightlife expenditure. With the average price of a cocktail at a massive £8.00 in London, going out without planning can be an expensive affair.
In designmynight, Telson and Webster have harnessed the diverse potential of London nightlife to create the first bespoke search engine geared specifically towards price comparison. The search criteria uniquely include specific drinks drinks prices, the type of night you can expect to have there and even when to beat the bar queues, and when you find your ideal venue there will often be an exclusive discount voucher too.
designmynight’s portal is as indispensible for student misadventures as it is for luxuriant cocktail nights. The reach of the website expands to cover great daytime haunts for lazy afternoon drinks, the best spots to catch the big game, where to have that critical business lunch, and of course charting the ever-evolving line-up of nightlife hotspots across the city.
Nick Telson comments: “Although Londoners can pride themselves on the sheer breadth of choice available in the city, often this eclecticism can become overwhelming, and costly. In today’s current climate, pre-planning spend before a night out is massively important so consumers can go to venues that fit their budget without any surprises.
With the price of a cocktail ranging from £4 to £17 in London, there is massive scope for unexpected overspending and we launched designmynight as an easy to use portal for tailored social planning, whatever your budget.”
designmynight’s comparative price search and booking service make it the definitive online destination for tailored social planning, using three different budget categories for their venue database.
designmynight also boasts a complementary Concierge Service, which brings Nick and Andrew’s expertise to all client briefs, from intimate parties to large-scale corporate events. Previous corporate clients of the designmynight Concierge have included, among others, Armani, L’Oreal and Garnier UK.
From basement Speakeasies to pop-ups, and East End warehouses to glorious rooftops, designmynight is the definitive source for the inside curve on all that’s new in one of the world’s most rapidly evolving capitals.
The multi-faceted draw of designmynight’s offerings will further diversify with the launch of designmynight Deals, an industry first for social buying, bringing group discounts across the board to a plethora of London nightspots. Details to be announced soon.
To have access to the concierge simply email requirements to [email protected] or find the form on the site’s homepage.

The Cycle Nicaragua to the Panama Canal tour takes a fascinating journey across three countries over 15 days. The price, from £2,570 per person, includes flights; b&b accommodation; hybrid bike hire; tour leader and support vehicle.

TALKING IT OUT
“Anger blows out the lamp of the mind,” said Robert Ingersoll.
It may be true. I heard a story about one woman who ran a classified
ad in order to sell her brand new car. It had only 3,000 miles.
“Like new,” the ad boasted. “Mint condition. $75.00.”
He laughed to himself, and said, “There goes the newspaper, making
another mistake.” But he decided to call the number anyway and ask
about it.
“Is it really brand new?”
“Yes,” she replied.
“Three thousand miles?”
“Yes.”
“The price?”
“Seventy-five dollars,” she answered.
“Seventy-five dollars! Lady, what’s wrong with it?” he asked.
“Nothing is wrong with it. And, amazingly, you’re the first to call.
I suppose nobody else believes the ad.”
He decided to look at it. She let him take a test drive. The car
looked exquisite and ran perfectly. He just couldn’t believe his
luck.
“The car is yours for $75.00. Just drive it away.”
He paid her and took the keys. “Please tell me, lady,” he persisted.
“You could have sold this car for $35,000, at least.
What is going on?”
She told her story: “I bought the car for my husband on our fortieth
wedding anniversary. Two weeks later he ran off with somebody else.
Last week I got a text from him. They are in a resort in Miami
Beach, Florida. The text said,
‘Need money, sell car, send cash.’
I did.”
What do you do when you are angry?
Some people “act it out.” They break something. Or they say
something they later regret. They strike back. Or they sell the car
for $75.00.
Other people “wait it out.” Waiting it out seemed to be her husband’s
strategy. Let her cool down – it will blow over. But the avoidance
of conflict usually never ends well. It just doesn’t go away by
itself.
Others “take it out.” They kick the dog or scream at the kids. They
lash out at the next unlucky person they come across.
Still others “fight it out.” Humorist Bob Orben says, “Who can ever
forget Winston Churchill’s immortal words: ‘We shall fight on the
beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in
the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills’? It
sounds exactly like our family vacation.” With friends and family,
fighting it out becomes bickering. On a larger scale, it’s called
warfare.
Of course, the best idea is to “talk it out.” Nothing new here – we
have to bring it up before we can get it out. But talking it out isn’t
shouting it out. I think some people believe that if they just say
it loudly enough, they can make it so.
Talking it out is about bringing it up – saying what needs to be
said clearly, calmly and kindly. But it is also about listening. I
think it’s interesting that the word “listen” contains the same
letters as the word “silent.” I know that I can’t listen when I’m
talking. I can’t listen when I’m figuring out what I want to say
next. I have to be still. I have to be silent.
And when I’m silent, something almost magical happens. Walls come
down and I can begin to see my way through. When I’m silent I create
space for something new to grow between us.
ACT IT OUT and your actions will become a block to good
communication.
WAIT IT OUT and you just let it build up inside.
TAKE IT OUT and you cause more hurt and anger.
FIGHT IT OUT and you create winners and losers.
But TALK IT OUT and you can get it out. Be honest. Be clear. But, be
reasonable. And then be silent. Let the magic of the moment ferment
so that understanding can grow.
Maybe then you can keep the car.

Crystal clear – Umbria in winter
Of all the places I’ve ever visited in the world – and I’ve visited a lot, believe me – my favourite is Umbria in Italy.
Of course, “favourite” is a subjective thing. Comparing Iceland to Greece, for example or Thailand to Canada is a little deciding which is preferable; chalk or cheese? And if you ask me what my favourite destination is in the depths of January, I’m far more likely to go for sunnier climes than I am at the end of August after a particularly hot summer.
Nevertheless, Umbria’s gently rolling hills in a warm September golden light remains the most beautiful countryside I’ve ever seen – for my own personal tastes.
I enjoyed New Zealand’s dramatic scenery, and I love the vineyards of “Le Sud-Ouest” of France. I love the Cotswolds, the Lake District and I love some of America’s dramatic city-scapes – in which New York stands out, of course.
I also love the beaches and islands of Thailand, the Greek white-walled islands glistening in what always seems to be a brilliant white summer light, but still, Umbria ultimately carries the day for me.
I don’t know exactly why this is – and it’s easy to like somewhere in a warm September glow – so I decided, last winter, to see if I would still love the mountainous undulating Italian middle country in the depths of December.
And to cut a long story short; I did. Umbria isn’t as accessible in December of course. But with a good guide book, safe and warm in North Face gear from head to toe and my favourite old walking boots with a good pair of ice grips for shoes handy in case needed, I set off on a few days’ magical walking through the most beautiful frosted landscape I think I’ve ever seen.
Clearly, my love for Umbria is deeper than a mere summer dalliance!

JUST CHILL
An Appalachian folk story tells of two friends who went coon
hunting. They treed a coon but could not get him down. So one
decided he’d climb the tree and shake the coon loose. To his
surprise, he found it wasn’t a coon at all, but a wildcat.
In a little while, his friend heard an awful commotion up in the
tree. Then he heard a voice screaming down at him, “Help! Help!”
“What’ll I do?”
“Just shoot up here amongst us,” his friend said. “One of us has got
to have some relief.”
Does your life ever feel like you’re wrestling with a wildcat and
somehow, somewhere, you have to get some relief? If so, you’re not
alone.
Psychologist Richard Wiseman asserts that people actually need more
relief now than ever before. We are living more stressful,
faster-paced lives than ever. He cites the results of an
international study conducted in collaboration with the British
Council to measure the speed of life.
The experiment was conducted by researchers who secretly timed how
fast thousands of pedestrians walked in city centers across the
globe, including London, Madrid, Singapore and New York. Granted,
this is not the most scientific experiment, but it is fascinating
nevertheless.
Prof. Richard Wiseman says, “This simple measurement provides a
significant insight into the physical and social health of a city.”
Where do the fastest walkers live? In order of speed, they are found
in Singapore (Singapore), Copenhagen (Denmark), Madrid (Spain),
Guangzhou (China) and Dublin (Ireland).
According to this study, we live about 10% faster now than twenty
years ago, when a similar experiment was conducted. The biggest
changes are found in and around Asia, where the pace of life in
Guangzhou (China) increased by over 20% and where Singapore showed a
30% increase.
A common American expression is, “Chill.” Are you anxious and
uptight? Chill. Need to de-stress? Just take it easy? Chill.
Chilling is pretty good advice, actually. Especially if the word
“chill” is spelled this way:
C – Calm down. When you’re anxious, frenzied or pressed, stop. Take
a deep breath and ask yourself, “Why?”
H – Hold back. Set a reasonable pace. Life is a marathon, not a
sprint. If you want to last, pace yourself. And take time to rest.
I – Indulge your desire for fun. Do something fun everyday and try
to put fun in your usual activities.
L – Learn how to just be. You already know how to DO. Take time to
BE. Don’t measure your life by what you accomplish, but by who you
are. Be present. Be attentive. But be.
L – Let it go. You are not responsible for everything and everybody.
In the immortal words of poet Robert Browning, “God’s in His Heaven;
all’s right with the world.” You don’t have to do it all yourself;
you don’t have to do it all right now. And some of it you may not
have to do at all.
You may feel like you’re wrestling with a wildcat. Or maybe you just
feel as if you’re living too fast. But if you need some relief,
“chill” is a good word to remember. Spell it right and you just
might get something you don’t expect. Happiness.

Climbing in El Chorro
One of the classic winter climbing locations in Spain is El Chorro. It’s easy to get to, as it’s only 50 km from Malaga, and there’s a huge range of climbing there – for beginners through to experts.
The big attraction at El Chorro is the limestone gorge. There’s multi-pitch climbing and other crags suitable for all kinds of climbers. There are more than 650 different routes – both bolted single and multi-pitch.
Handily close to El Chorro village, climbers can easily walk to the gorge, so there’s no need to think about transport at the beginning and end of each climb.
It’s best to get your climbing equipment before arriving at El Chorro – you’ll have a wider choice available than buying on the spot.
The climbing routes are accessed by a walkway called ‘Camino Del Ray’. It’s a manmade structure that travels the length of the gorge a hundred metres above the valley floor. It is a bit rickety as it’s been there for more than eighty years. Recently though, it has been strengthened with via ferrata cables and bolts. Most of the multipitch routes are above or below the Camino Del Ray.
As you go deeper into the gorge, you used to be able to use railway tunnels to get access, but they are now patrolled by guards. Climbers have to use another route in – either by the Camino Del Ray or walking over the top of the gorge. In this part of the gorge, most of the climbing is single pitch.
Highlights of the gorge include El Polvorin with its really steep wall and 6th grade routes and Los Cotos which has slab climbing at the lower grades.
If you’ve done plenty of climbing before, you’ll know exactly what equipment you need to take with your climbing shoes. However, if you’re a novice, you should play it safe and go on a guided climb for your first venture in the El Chorro gorge.

Quarter Of Pupils Avoid
School Loos, Survey Finds:
Time For A ‘Bog Standard’,
Urges Leading Charity
19 Dec 11
ERIC is working with the Paediatric Continence Forum, British Toilet Association, School Councils UK and the Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association to implement the campaign.
A quarter of pupils in England’s schools avoid using toilets, according to a new survey by a charity which today launches a campaign to get the Government to introduce new regulations to make school toilets healthier and easier to use.
ERIC, the UK charity helping children with continence problems, points out that the limited regulations that do exist don’t include vital things like supply of toilet paper or soap. Netmums is backing ERIC’s campaign and people can support by signing an online petition for a new ‘Bog Standard’. Lobbying letters will be sent to Government Ministers, and the charity is seeking a meeting with the Schools Minister to press its case.
Regulations to ensure toilet and water facilities used by school staff meet proper standards do not extend to toilets used by pupils. School toilets have a big impact on health and wellbeing but many schools are failing their pupils with poorly maintained, dirty and smelly toilets.
The newly published survey was carried out by ERIC and Netmums in November, revealing
- a quarter of pupils said they avoid going to the toilet because they are dirty
- 31% pupils said they had toilets with broken locks
- 19% pupils avoid drinking so they don’t have to go to the toilet
- 53% parents felt their child does not drink enough at school
- 91% parents thoughts pupil toilets should be cleaned twice a day or more
- 91% parents thought that cleanliness/condition of pupil toilets should be a priority for schools
ERIC’s petition can be signed here: http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/bogstandard
Jenny Perez, ERIC Director said; “Schools should meet the needs of their pupils in this area. Smelly, dirty toilets and a lack of privacy are unacceptable. Adults don’t have to put up with these problems – so why should children?
“There is a strong link between poor toilet facilities and continence problems like wetting and soiling. These affect 1 in 12 children and young people, causing loss of self-esteem and bullying. For most, a cure can be found, but all treatments require access to proper water and toilet facilities.
“Poor toilets attract poor behavior and unpleasant school toilets, a lack of soap and toilet paper and other basics are a recipe for these young people’s continuing suffering. ERIC will be lobbying for these changes through our Bog Standard campaign. Please sign the online petition and help us ensure school toilets improve for good.”

Magic Memories
Of Christmas
09 Dec 11
Sue Atkins gives half a dozen tips to make this year’s family Christmas something to remember for all the right reasons.
A friend of mine is having trouble sorting out the arrangements over Christmas Dinner with her ex. I thought that maybe I should encourage her to refocus her priorities, by reminding her of something important. Right now she is creating a blueprint of how she handles this magical time for her kids – and she is in the process of making and creating memories for them that will last for their lifetimes.
So often people focus on the stress of Christmas but I like to focus on the positive things in life. You can leave creating a great time and wonderful memories to chance, or you can weave the magic tapestry of a wonderful experience of Christmas with your family through great design and planning.
Here are six ideas to conjure up that extra bit of magic in your Christmas, or holiday time:
IDEA 1: Imagine it
Just take a little time now to close your eyes, take in a couple of deep relaxing breaths and visualise in a perfect world how you’d like your Christmas to look… and sound.. and feel… make the picture really colourful, brighter and really up close to you… and perhaps you could imagine just stepping into the picture or film that you have running in your head and really imagine being in there. Imagine I have waved a magic wand and have made things just as you would really want… and do this over and over again until it feels real. You’ll start to notice the difference in how much more relaxed you immediately feel and you’ll start to notice what seems to unfold as if by magic from now on!
IDEA 2: Capture the Memories
Take lots of digital photos during family get-togethers. Upload the photos to a family photo-sharing site (I recommend: www.DropShots.com; it’s safe and secure, and photos are not shared publicly or indexed by search engines) and send the link to everyone.
During your get-togethers have family pictures and albums available from previous holidays. They can stimulate conversations and warm memories of Christmases past and – of important people who might no longer be around anymore.
IDEA 3: The Sound of Music
Get the music cranked up and blaring in your house! From Christmas Carols to Slade or Leona Lewis! And ask everyone in your family what their favourite songs are and go online to i-tunes, find the songs, download them, make a copy for everyone to keep as a great memory and a personal little pressie to give to them. Everyone’s favourite Christmas holiday music all captured on one CD – what a special gift and memory!
IDEA 4: Box O’ Wishes
This idea comes from Oprah Winfrey… place a small box at everyone’s place setting containing an index card for each person. Ask everyone to answer one or more of these questions about each person there and put the answers into their box.
Example questions are:
• What I love about you is…
• Thank you for…
• My Christmas wish for you is…
Everyone will leave with perhaps the most meaningful gift they have ever received—a box of love and good wishes from everyone at the party. This is really a lovely moment as it also sets the tone and frame of mind for your entire time together!
IDEA 5: Box O’ Questions
Everyone thinks up and writes down 2 to 3 questions on topics they would like to know about each other or, as host, you can create a list of questions. The questions need to be general enough so they can be answered by anyone.
Put all the questions in a box and pass it around to each person to select and answer.
Example questions are:
• What is your favourite childhood memory?
• What is the most important life lesson you learned from your parents?
• Who was your childhood best friend and what made them so special?
• What was school like for you as a child? What were your best and worst subjects?
• Who were your childhood heroes and why?
• What accomplishments are you the most proud of?
• What is your most important goal for the next 3 to 5 years?
IDEA 6: Time Versus Trinkets
For your close family and friends, instead of marching through the shopping centres to find the “perfect gift,” the most meaningful gift you can give is your time. Along with a card filled with thoughtful sentiments, enclose half-a-dozen experiences you are giving for them for the coming year.
Examples are:
• A picnic at a special place.
• A trip to the beach or the snowy mountains or a lovely river.
• A football game, a local fair, a film, a special lunch outing at their favourite restaurant, etc.
• An entire day when you will do anything they want you to do or accompany them anywhere—without complaint!
Explore, get creative and relax and I really wish you and your family a warm, wonderful and especially meaningful Christmas holiday!
Have a magical time!

BPA Warns Against
Baby ‘Bling’
12 Dec 11
Recent news reports highlight the sales of potentially dangerous ‘bling’ baby soothers and other baby products such as feeding bottlesand the Baby Products Association (BPA) warns parents not to put their children at risk by purchasing such items, which are often sold on websites, independent shops and market stalls.
Robert Anslow, managing director of the BPA comments: “These baby soothers and sometimes baby feeding bottles are manufactured by legitimate companies in accordance with the highest safety standards, but are then being adorned with glued on gems and beads by third party companies. The addition of ‘bling’ makes these products unsafe as the decorative pieces can easily fall off and cause choking if lodged in a child’s throat.
“While it may be tempting to purchase these products, particularly as they appeal to babies and toddlers as they sparkle and look fun, there are strict safety standards which prevent labels and decorations being stuck onto dummies for very good reason. The addition of such decorations causes grave concern for the safety of the babies and young children for whom they are intended.”
Anyone caught selling ‘bling’ dummies or bottles could face fines of up to £20,000 and parents who come across such items are urged to call Consumer Direct on 0845 040506.

Verbal Attack On Nursing
Mum Galvanises Public
Support For UK’s 1st
Breast-feeding Flash Mob!
13 Dec 11
A Mum enjoying her lunch in a popular Brighton café was last week vilified by fellow diners who described her breast-feeding her baby daughter as ‘very unpleasant’. The group made up of predominately middle-aged women continued with their verbal assault leaving Mum, Claire Jones Hughes in tears and visibly shaken until other customers came to her aid.
Claire commented ‘I felt extremely vulnerable, despite the support of another customer. I had been publicly bullied and intimated for doing something as natural as feeding my baby. It was shocking and upsetting’.
Management at Brighton’s ‘Wai kika Moo Kau’ café were swift to reassure Jones-Hughes that nursing mums were very welcome and that the behaviour of the group in question had been unacceptable. There remains however a lack of general awareness re public-breastfeeding and the law – it is in fact illegal to prevent mums breast-feeding in public and equally, women are not obliged by law to be ‘discreet’ or to ‘cover up’ although most choose to do so. The reality is however that throughout the UK, many nursing mums can encounter significant prejudice when feeding their babies in public places.
Suzanne Borrell, Director of the flagship BabyShow Event BabyExpo held annually in Brighton adds
‘There is an assumption that Brighton is generally seen as a very tolerant, broadminded community but as this (and previous) unpleasant episode shows, nowhere is safe from such bigotry. We actively promote breast feeding at all our events as one of my greatest concerns is the impact an unprovoked attack like this could have. For a new mum, lacking in confidence, maybe suffering from post natal depression or a mum struggling to successfully feed, comments like this could be the trigger to stop them nursing altogether’
Such has been the support for Claire and the right of mums to publically breast-feed however that Brightonmums.com, the online hub for parents in Brighton and Hove are hosting the UK’s first ‘Breast- Feeding Flash Mob’ on Thursday 15 in central Brighton at 1300 hours. Nursing mums and supporters of mum’s rights to publically feed are invited to join this celebration of breast-feeding and motherhood with the aim to send a strong, positive message to mums, babies and the wider community.

Strictly Fever
Hits Toy World
15 Dec 11
Queens of the ballroom Alesha Dixon and Alex Jones have tied in a poll on the best ever Strictly Come Dancing costume. Now a budding designer and graduate from Chelsea College of Art and Design, Beth Parry has recreated the top ten Strictly outfits on a girls’ fashion toy by crafting the stunning dresses on mini mannequins.
New research out today by girls’ fashion design toy Harumika showed that UK females voted the beautiful peach Waltz dress worn by 2007 winner Alesha in the series finale and Alex Jones’ white Halloween Paso Doble costume, worn in week five of the current series, as the best ever Strictly outfits.
The other top costumes included 2010 champion Kara Tointon in a sparkly peach dress that she danced the American Smooth to and the dress Destiny Child’s Michelle Williams wore when she danced the Waltz with Brendan Cole in the same series. Meanwhile, Holly Valance, who was voted off with Jones in this year’s semi final came eighth with her gold sequinned Cha Cha Cha dress that she wore for the show opening.
The top ten Strictly outfits were:
1. Alesha Dixon’s Waltz peach dress worn in the 2007 finale (10 per cent)
2. Alex Jones’ white Paso Doble dress from the Dracula story worn in the Halloween special this series (10 per cent)
3. Kara Tointon’s sparkly peach dress she danced the American Smooth to in 2010 series Final (9 per cent)
4. Michelle Williams’ pink ball gown she wore in show six in 2010 (8 per cent)
5. Jo Wood’s sequinned ball gown for the Strictly promotional pictures in the 2009 series (7 per cent)
6. Rachel Stevens’ turquoise dress for the Strictly promotional pictures in series six (7 per cent)
7. Ola Jordan, purple animal print number she danced the Foxtrot to in 2009 (6 per cent)
8. Holly Valance’s gold short Cha Cha Cha dress she wore in the first episode of the current series (6 per cent)
9. Christine Bleakley’s pink ballgown she danced the Waltz to in 2008 (6 per cent)
10. Flavia Cacace’s purple gown she danced the Tango to with Russell Grant in this year’s series (4 per cent)
The designs were made using the new Harumika Evening Gown Set, which has been a hit with fashion students as well as young girls designing their own ball gowns and party dresses. Since its launch in 2009, Harumika has gone from strength to strength with sales up 115% in 2011 versus 2010.1
Designer Beth Parry comments, “Strictly Come Dancing offers fantastic inspiration for designers with the glitz and glamour in the show, week in week out. The designers on the show have huge budgets and time to prepare each outfit, but with the Harumika collection it is possible to recreate these beautiful costumes on a miniature scale”.
Girls product manager at Bandai, maker of Harumika Vicki Elmer comments, “The designs options with Harumika are endless and we love seeing budding fashionistas using our wonderful sets to recreate dresses worn by celebrities, such as those who have appeared in Strictly Come Dancing. We are delighted with how well Harumika has performed this year and are excited about our plans to develop the range in 2012.”

What If In 2012 You Really
Were A Happier Parent?
12 Dec 11
NLP is a life coaching skill that up until now has been mostly used at work. Now, thanks to Judy Bartkowiak author of Be a happier parent with NLP and a whole series of NLP workbooks in the Engaging NLP series, parents, children, teenagers, teachers, new mums and mums returning to work can benefit from the principles of NLP.
Just imagine if you believed ‘there’s no failure only feedback’? How great would that be?! Or if you really believed you have all the resources you need?
What if you could get your kids to do what you wanted them to do by changing the words you use?
Imagine being able to separate yourself from the emotional response and feel like an adult again?
This book is full of examples, quizes, tips and ideas based on Judy’s own family from tots to teens and the many children and parents she has counselled or taught over the years.

Winter Warmer
For Parents
06 Dec 11
As any mum or dad will testify, getting a young child into a regular sleep pattern is the holy grail of parenting. Even once they are settled for the night there can be many nocturnal awakenings commonly associated with hunger, nappy changes and fluctuations in temperature.
During the winter months the drop in temperature during the wee small hours is often the main culprit for waking little ones from their much needed slumber.
Glasgow based parents Gavin and Kelly Cruickshank know only too well the trial and tribulations of getting their three young children to sleep. The Cruickshank’s have developed the innovative new Sunbuster blackout blind which as well as being safe (it has no looped cords) and easy to fit (it simply sticks to the glass), also has the added benefit of insulating the window thus making the room warmer.
University testing has proven that the Sunbuster blackout blind increases air temperature around the window by a massive six degrees.
Gavin explains “We developed the Sunbuster in early 2011 prior to the summer time when the long daylight hours can be the main culprit for keeping little ones awake. We designed the Sunbuster blind using a fleeced lined thermal blackout fabric which has been university tested to provide a six degree thermal gain which helps prevent night time chills whilst reducing fuel costs.”
The Sunbuster blackout blind adheres directly to the glass using a non-residue gel, which means that there are no gaps where light can penetrate. Magnetic strips hold the blind in raised or lowered position, removing the need for hazardous looped blind cords associated with child fatalities – tragically six children were fatally injured by looped blind cords in 2010 alone
TJS Innovations picked up a highly commended award from the prestigious John Logie Baird awards panel for the Sunbuster blackout blind in March 2011.
Thermal Image
On the thermal insulation image, you can see that the left hand side of the window is covered by the Sunbuster blind and the right hand section (the blue part) is uncovered, the difference in surface temperature is around 6 degrees.

Boys Will Be Boys…
But if You Want Your
Child to Be Successful
Make Him Play With The Girls
13 Dec 11
– Research Reveals Socialising with Girls Helps Boys Learn Essential Soft Skills
– Girls Who Enjoy Mixed Gender Play Have Better Spatial Abilities
– LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre Invites Girls to Beat the Boys at Their Own Game and Join Their Junior Construction Panel
It’s bad news for little lads everywhere…
While boys might prefer playing with their friends than the fairer sex, experts say socialising with girls is good for their health and future prospects.
A new report by leading child psychologist, Pat Spungin, analyses the way children play together and reveals that young males who mix with females have more chance of developing the soft skills modern society prizes.
The research, commissioned by LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, Manchester, reveals playing with girls can have a positive effect on boys’ learning; enabling them to perform better at school and work.
Dr Spungin, a leading commentator on child development in the UK, found mixed sex socialising had advantages for females too – helping them acquire more traditionally ‘male’ skills like heightened spatial abilities and awareness.
Her work documents the way genetic patterning and learned behaviours combine to create what we view as male and female play.
These ways of enjoying toys dictate how and what the sexes learn – defining future roles and capabilities.
Dr Spungin highlights research into the brain activity of children as young as three months, showing how males and females are primed to enjoy and tackle different tasks.
So while boys build towers and bridges, boosting their spatial, logic and maths skills, girls like dollies and make-believe, leading to a more advanced sense of empathy and language.
Mixing the two has positive results for everyone and she is advising parents and teachers to look at less segregated play times.
As she says: “What humans inherit is just a starting point. It’s the interaction of nature and nurture that makes us what we are.”
“When different sexes play together then each is able to learn from the other be quite creative as a result.”
“Girls build up their spatial skills and boys their social and emotional skills while both are having a good time.”
Now bosses at the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre are hoping to put Dr Spungin’s theory to the test – by calling on girls to join their teams of budding builders.
The Trafford Centre attraction is looking for primary school children to become part of its existing Junior Construction Panel, currently made up of six to ten-year-old male LEGO® fans, and road-test its new collections and events.
An appeal was launched to find the team last year but despite region-wide media attention and thousands of entries, no girls applied.
Now bosses hope the new search will prompt a wider range of responses.
LEGOLAND Discovery Centres marketing manager Rachael Lockitt explains: “As Dr Spungin’s research shows it really is very important for boys to play alongside girls, as well as with their peers, and enjoying uni-sex toys like LEGO is a great way to do that.
“We’re looking forward to seeing what difference having male and female members will make to the feel of the Panel – and to seeing what the girls enjoy building the most. We have plans to develop our product offering for girls and are keen to get our new Junior Construction Panel members on board ASAP to involve them in the process. The boys will get involved too as we hope some of them will enjoy the new area as much as the girls.”
Budding model builders are asked to apply by submitting a photograph of their favourite LEGO model along with a 100 essay explaining what they would bring to the Junior Construction Panel.
Entries can be submitted by [email protected] or posting images on the Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/LDCManchester) with their essay as the caption. Essays should begin “XXX (insert name) would be the perfect addition to the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Junior Construction Panel because…”
Mix , Match and Learn
Dr Spungin’s Tips for Integrated Play
– Give your children toys designed for the opposite sex
– Encourage word-based activities for boys and spatial activities for girls
– Don’t label toys as ‘for boys’ or ‘for girls’ and discourage your child from doing so too
– Join in with opposite gender games – get dad to play with the dolls while mum tackles the train set
– Set up mixed play sessions with friends or relatives
– If you can’t find appropriate toys, write to the manufacturers and ask them why
