It seems to be the wonder vitamin – and now researchers say that vitamin D, which we usually get from sunshine, protects us against mental decline as we get older, and can reduce our chances of developing Parkinson’s disease. Older adults in the USA and Europe are likely to be deficient in the vitamin D – and the extent of the deficiency can determine your likelihood of suffering major cognitive decline. Researchers checked the blood levels of vitamin D of 858 people aged 65 years and older. Those who were severely deficient were 60 per cent more likely to suffer significant cognitive decline over the following six years compared with those who had reasonable levels of the vitamin. In a separate study, researchers have found that the vitamin protects against Parkinson’s disease. In a major study of 3,173 men and women aged between 50 and 79, researchers discovered that high vitamin D levels had a protective effect against Parkinson’s. Over a 29-year follow-up, those with high levels of the vitamin were 67 per cent less likely to develop the disease than those with low levels. Earlier studies have shown that the vitamin also protects against cancer, heart disease and type II diabetes. (Sources: Archives of Internal Medicine, 2010; 170: 1099-100 – cognitive study; Archives of Neurology, 2010; 67: 808-11 – Parkinson’s study).

A hospital stay could be one of the major causes of mental decline and dementia in the elderly. Hospitals, and the cocktail of drugs that are regularly prescribed, could almost double the risk, a new study has discovered. Researchers from the University of Washington found that hospital care for a non-critical illness increased the chances of dementia alone by 40 per cent in patients aged 65 years and older. Overall, the cases of dementia and cognitive decline were almost twice as great in the group that had been in hospital for any length of time compared with a similar group that had remained out of hospital. “Hospitalization may be a marker for cognitive decline or dementia that has not been diagnosed,” say the authors. • DISCOVER how medicine can bring on many of the problems of ageing in the WDDTY special report, ‘It’s drugs, not old age’, which is available to all new subscribers. When it comes to sensible – and healthy – drinking, Goldilocks could have something to teach us. Drinking too much, or not at all, increases the risk of dementia and cognitive decline.
Instead, say researchers from the University of Turku in Finland, drinking a little alcohol could have the most protective effect on brain functioning.
The ‘little and often’ approach has a positive effect on the way our brain functions 20 years or more later, say the researchers. However, heavy alcohol consumers, or binge drinkers – defined as drinking an entire bottle of wine or equivalent at least once a month – double their risk of dementia compared with someone who regularly drinks one glass. Strangely, people who do not drink at all also increase their risk of dementia 20 years on.

The best start to the day just got better. Oats for breakfast helps prevent artery disease, scientists have reported this week. The oats combat chronic inflammation, which can lead to the artery disease known as atherosclerosis, as well as many other health problems, too. Oats contain several healthy compounds, researchers at Tufts University in Boston, Mass, have discovered, including avenanthramides, which have anti-inflammatory qualities, as well as phenolic antioxidants, which stop blood cells sticking to artery walls. Earlier studies had discovered that oats lower blood cholesterol. (Source: USDA/Agricultural Research Services, February 16, 2010).

A new study has confirmed that vigorous exercise can improve heart function in patients with atherosclerosis.
Although small, the study has gone some way towards defining just what the biological benefits of such exercise might be.
Researchers randomly assigned 19 patients, who had coronary artery disease and who displayed abnormal vasoconstriction when induced by a drug, to either an exercise training group (ten patients) or a control group (nine patients).
After four weeks of exercise training, the potential for drug induced vasoconstriction was reduced by 54 per cent compared with controls. Blood flow velocity was increased by as much as 96 per cent.
There were no significant changes seen in the control group in either blood flow or blood vessel diameter during the course of the study.
The reasons for the changes are not entirely clear. But the authors suggest that one of the reasons why exercise is so beneficial is that it sets off a series of chemical reactions which produce beneficial free radical scavengers.
The researchers conclude that, for those with stable coronary artery disease, exercise has a significant therapeutic value (N Engl J Med, 2000; 342: 454-60).

Warfarin, the blood-thinning drug, is standard treatment for people with atrial fibrillation, a condition that causes abnormal heart rhythms – but it could be doing more harm than good.
The drug is routinely prescribed to help prevent stroke, but new research suggests that many patients taking warfarin are getting no benefit from it, and could be running a risk of excessive bleeding.
Only those with atrial fibrillation who have a high risk of stroke should continue taking warfarin, say researchers from the University of Cincinnati. A safer drug should be found for the majority who are at low risk.

Sceptics dismiss it as a placebo, but acupuncture really can reduce pain, and scientists have used brain scanners to prove it.
Acupuncture needles affect the way the brain perceives and processes pain, say researchers from University Hospital in Essen, Germany.
They tested acupuncture’s pain-relieving capabilities on a group of 18 volunteers, who had an electrical device attached to their ankles. They had brain scans when they had acupuncture needles placed in three areas, and when the needles were removed. All the time the device was causing pain and discomfort.
Areas of the brain that process pain had changed significantly when the acupuncture needles were inserted, the scientists discovered.

While everyone has been worried about the possibility that mobile (cell) phones cause cancer, few realise that the devices are a major cause of tinnitus, the distressing hearing problem. Even using a mobile phone for 10 minutes increases the risk by 71 per cent, researchers have discovered, although the risk doubles for those who have used a mobile phone for more than four years. The overall risk for any use is 37 per cent compared with someone who does not use a mobile phone. Researchers made the discovery when they compared the records of 100 tinnitus sufferers with a similar number of healthy controls. Most tinnitus sufferers said their problem was on their left side, where they held their mobile phone, and 29 per cent said they also suffered from vertigo. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine, 2010; doi: 10.1136/oem.2009.048116).

Pregnant women who use a mobile (cell) phone are more likely to have a child who has behavioural problems. The risk increases if the child starts using a phone in its early developmental years.
Children who were exposed to mobile phones while they were in the womb, and who used one themselves, are 50 per cent more likely to have behavioural problems. The greatest harm is done when the mother uses a phone before the child is born, say researchers, which accounts for a 40 per cent increased risk.
The Danish National Birth Cohort study based their findings on a group of around 100,000 women who were pregnant between 1996 and 2002 and who were questioned again seven years later.
The researchers say the findings are in line with earlier research, and that they have taken into account other possible causes of behavioural problems.

Long-term use of mobile (cell) phones does cause brain tumours, major independent research has confirmed. The finding exposes the cover-up of the mobile phone industry, which had paid for a study review that demonstrated the safety of their products and networks.
But using the same data from the industry’s own study, researchers have found that people who frequently use a mobile (cell) phone or cordless phone for more than 10 years run a high risk of developing a brain tumour.
Lead researcher R B Dubey of Apeejay College of Engineering in Sohna, India says that long-term mobile phone use is not safe, and that current safety guidelines need to be revised.
Long-term phone users have malignant gliomas and benign acoustic neuromas on the same side of the head where they hold the device, the researchers found.
They used the data collated by the Interphone study, paid for by the mobile phone industry.
Swedish cancer specialist Dr Lennart Hardell came to a similar conclusion reached by Dubey’s team when he carried out his own research into mobile phone use. He estimates that the phones can double the risk of a brain tumour.
To reduce the cancer risk, Dubey recommends that people use their phones less often, text rather than phone, and use an ‘air tube’ headset rather than a wired one.

Starting the day with a big breakfast won’t necessarily help you lose weight. The theory has it that eating a large breakfast means you eat less during the day, thus reducing your calorie intake.
Researchers who examined the eating habits of around 300 people discovered that they also had a big lunch and a big dinner, too.
If you want to lose weight, say the researchers from the Else-Kroner-Fresenius Centre of Nutritional Medicine, you have to eat a small lunch and dinner.
That assumes a direct correlation between weight gain and calorie intake – and we know that’s only part of the story, anyway.

Get A Cruise Job Before Winter
Hot, sunny days and white, sandy beaches.
Getting away from freezing, boring, snowy winters, what
could be more encouraging to get a cruise job? We know what
is around the corner when summer is a distant memory for the
northern hemisphere as the leaves change colours. Is there
any technique to ensure a position on board before the snow
flies?
Over the holiday periods there are extra jobs onboard over
the holiday according to the myth. This is wrong. Not only
the holiday periods, but most cruise ships also cruise at
full capacity over the year. An exception to this is due to
the number of kids onboard most family cruise lines, they
employ tons of youth. To get your foot in the door for this
type of cruise job for a probable full time year round job
this equates to a very good opportunity when it comes
available. A number of other vacancies are related to the
launching of new cruise ships. For example, Royal Caribbean
needed approximately 1,650 crew members when Allure of the
Seas was launched. For 2011, an additional 7,000 cruise jobs
will be required for new ships. For those just beginning
their hunt and for those that have been looking a job on a
ship for some time now, always keep in mind that there are
ALWAYS positions available.
For employment on cruise ships, do you think you are over
qualified? In order to just get hired, should you tone down
your experience? With your experience-packed resume, what
are employers considering when they read it? Recently, this
person explained, “For almost a year now without one
interview, I have been applying for various jobs.” And we
were asked this question, “Is it likely that I am too
qualified and cruise lines simply overlook me?”
For starters, cruise applicants should first ask themselves
a couple of questions before getting discouraged. Have you
been consistently following up on your application? Have you
been sending your resume to particular hiring managers? If
the answer is yes, then it’s time to re-look at your resume
and cover letter again. If their work experience and
education go beyond what are required, it may be a question
mark for a potential employer and this is what cruise
applicants need to understand. Being over qualified is the
same as age discrimination because it may be interpreted
that you do not fit in with the existing position. I takes
more than a great resume and cover letter landing your dream
job it also takes perseverance. Keep following up, once you
apply – these are the types of job seekers who land the job!
Now’s the right time, before the snow flies.

Is Your Job Search Taking Longer Than It Should?
What does it cost you to be unemployed? Taking into account
lost wages and the many added expenses associated with job
hunting, plus the fact that even the fastest job searches
generally take at least a few months from start to job
offer, it is not too hard to believe that each bout of
unemployment will cost you many thousands of dollars. With
this figure in mind, if you could shorten your job search
by a few weeks – maybe even just a few days – I think you’ll
agree that the effort would be well worth it.
First impressions are important to a successful job search
and your resume is often the way that an employer first
gets to know you. Is your resume creating the first
impression that you want it to create? Is your resume
working for you and generating phone calls and interviews?
Or, is your resume working against you, actually extending
your job search and costing you money?
Especially when the job market is competitive, unemployment
is high, and job openings are few , you can’t take the
chance of wasting even a single opportunity. If your resume
isn’t working for you as hard as it could be, it is time to
revise it.
A first-rate, standout resume that is appropriately
focused, highlights your past achievements, and
demonstrates how hiring you will be a better investment than
hiring your competitors will stand out and win you those
coveted interviews. The more interviews you go on, the more
job offers you will receive, the sooner you will have your
dream job and start bringing in regular paychecks. Isn’t
that more enticing than sinking what money you do have
down the ever-increasing whirlpool of the drain with a
second-rate resume?
If you want better, stronger results in your job search,
you must overhaul your resume. Think carefully about what
the employer is seeking in a candidate. Do they want a
candidate who will grow their sales? Do they need a
candidate who knows how to decrease costs? Are they
looking for a candidate to refine processes for them and
heighten efficiency? Maybe they need a combination of all
these things? Whatever the answer, be certain that your
resume emphasizes past achievements that show how you have
done these things in the past. This is proof to the employer
that you can do the same for him in the future.
While there are some people who are able to develop their
own resume, and create a document that is truly powerful,
compelling, and effective, the vast majority of job hunters
would be better off seeking the assistance of a professional
resume writer. If you have any doubts about the power of
your resume, or any doubts about your ability to develop a
results-generating resume, don’t hesitate to consult with a
professional resume writer. In virtually all cases, the
investment you make in having your resume professionally
written will pay you back many times over with a much
faster and more successful job search.

How a Prenuptial Contract Can Provide Security
A prenuptial agreement is an insurance policy against the
breakup of your impending marriage. It should be viewed the
same if you were taking out life insurance or income
protection. It is made with the aim of both parties
protecting their personal assets and thus protecting
themselves and their loved ones.
In order to be valid a prenup agreement must be formed
before the wedding. It is also advisable it is signed no
later than 21 days to the wedding, lest it be decreed by the
courts that one of the couple was “forced” to sign while
under duress.
The concept of the prenup is that it protects the assets
that the couple took individually into the relationship.
This offers security to those who may have taken the biggest
amount of wealth and property into relationship. Where
without a prenup the assets would be split 50/50 between the
two parties, with a prenup the party bringing in most the
assets would then retain those assets.
Any assets acquired during the marriage will also be
accounted if the event of a divorce. The prenup can state
that those producing the largest amount of wealth can hold
onto it if the marriage ends.
A prenuptial agreement can also consider any children that
the parties bring into the marriage at the start. The
prenuptial contract can decide which of the children gets
what should the couple divorce.
While the prenuptial contract does have offer a large degree
of security as to the protection of assets following a
divorce, strictly speaking, they are not enforceable under
English law. Nevertheless, looking at the recent publicised
case of Radmacher, it shows that although unenforceable, the
English courts are considering the content of a prenup more
and more. Because of this legal uncertainty it is essential
that prenups are drawn up correctly in order not to be
thrown out by the courts.
Although there is no strict legal requirement that a
prenuptial agreement be drafted by solicitor it is strongly
advisable. An experienced solicitor will use proper drafting
techniques to ensure that the agreement has been drawn up
properly and therefore lessen the chances that one party can
challenge it at a later date. The will make sure that the
agreement follows the purpose for which it was intended –
provide the added security of protected personal assets in
the event of a divorce.

Are Garment Steamers Worth The Investment?
Not too long ago garment steamers were were used almost
exclusively by dry cleaners, tailor shops or clothing stores
for quickly pressing clothes. I can remember buying a sports
jacket at the local men’s store years ago. Although he
jacket fit right off of the rack it was rather wrinkled so
the tailor took it into the back room and came out with it
perfectly pressed. When I asked how he did that so quickly
he said he had a garment steamer in the back room.
Back then I didn’t know what a garment steamer was, however,
I could only imagine that they quite were expensive and
cumbersome. Today, garment steamers are affordable,
versatile, easy to work with and available for you to have
in your home. You may wonder if it is worth having a garment
steamer at home, after all, you probably already have a steam
iron to iron your clothes. Why would you need a garment
steamer? Because an iron is not as versatile as a garment
steamer and it will not do all the tasks around your home
that a garment steamer can do.
In addition to getting the wrinkles out of your clothes your
garment steamer will also disinfect and sanitize your clothes
at the same time. You would be surprised, and I imagine
pleased, at some of the other tasks it can perform.
I’m sure you have heard about the national outbreak of bed
bugs. With the current outbreak of bed bugs do you worry
about picking up bed bugs while traveling and staying in
hotels. Your garment steamer will not only kill any bed bugs
you may have on your clothes but you can use your garment
steamer to steam clean your suit case, your coats or jackets
and anything else you may have taken on your trip.
In addition to clothes, your garment steamer can be used in
many other areas of your home. You can disinfect and
sanitize your mattresses with your garment steamer. This
will eliminate bed bugs, fleas, flea larvae and other
allergens including dust mites that may bother your
allergies.
Garment steamers can also be use to remove the wrinkles from
curtains and drapes while they are on your windows. This
would also eliminate any bed bugs, dust mites and other
allergens hiding in your curtains or drape. Allergens such
as dust mites as well as bed bugs, fleas and flea larvae
like to hide in curtains and drapes.
The upholstery on your furniture is another good place to
use your garment cleaner. Not only will it remove wrinkles
your garment steamer will remove odors and give your entire
room a fresher, cleaner smell. Your garment steamer also can
eliminate bed bugs, fleas and allergens like dust mites that
may be living and thriving in your furniture.
As you can see, garment steamers have come a long way in
recent years. And they have become more affordable making it
more realistic to have a garment steamer in your home to keep
so many things clean, fresh and wrinkle free. It may be time
for you to consider having a garment steamer in your home.

Hypnosis is a relaxation method that allows YOU to access your amazing
subconscious mind where you can more effectively achieve goals. You create the
outcome you intend by changing your mind set and bypassing or eliminating
blocks. The following is your recipe for successful weight loss.
1 Part – Fed Up With Diets
1 Part – Intent
1 Part – Desire
1 Part – Motivation
1 Part – Imagination
A dash of self discipline
A great hypnotist!
Mix these ingredients together and POW! SUCCESS! The weight slips off your body,
you feel GREAT! If you get off track, simply mix another batch and WOW! It’s
easy to get back on track!
This recipe eliminates feeling deprived, eliminates the need for will power as
your main source of motivation and eliminates excuses.
Here’s how it works:
1 Part – Fed Up With Diets: Diets DON’T work. A diet starts, and as we all
know, diets ends. You may lose the weight and then you put it back on. That yoyo
dieting is terrible for your body and confuses your metabolism. That Monday
morning resolve, “I’m going to be good today”, only makes you feel bad about
yourself when it inevitably fails.
1 Part – Intent: A new year’s resolution is a good thing in that it creates
intent. No whining, complaining, or poor me stuff that you did all last year. A
strong intent is motivated by a desire to take care of your body because when
your body feels good, everything is better!
1 Part – Desire: If you care about yourself, you can dredge up some desire to
make changes to your body. Hmm, that new outfit would look great! Maybe you’ll
even be happy with your body. And if you think you’ll never be happy with your
body, then desire to be satisfied, content or accepting of your self.
1 Part – Motivation: OK, it’s true, there has to be some motivation to take off
weight. Motivation is the desire to let go of what you have been doing that
doesn’t work, to do something different. It’s best to be motivated for yourself,
but ft motivation happens because you are going on vacation or to a wedding, it
still works.
1 Part – Imagination: When you can “see” it in your mind, you can make it happen
in your life. A simple premise and a powerful one. Tapping into your imagination
makes weight loss easier, if not fun and effortless.
A Dash Of Self Discipline: When you were a child you were disciplined by your
parents. Follow the rules, do things a certain way, meet expectations, put off
gratification for a better goal. So tap into that training, or muster up the
self discipline that you have used tons of times when you created successes in
your life.
A Great Hypnotist: Everyone needs support and that is just what a hypnotist is.
Gently guiding you to create your positive body image, inspiring you to move
forward towards your goal and guiding you through the blocks that have been
holding you back. What a relief not to have to do it all on your own.
Two things are important for successful and long lasting weight loss. What you
put into your body and how much fat you burn. Hypnosis helps you gain control by
helping you to desire the foods that are fresh, clean and nutritionally
valuable. You change your eating habits easily and comfortably so you don’t
“feel” like eating the sugary, fatty foods that contributed to your weight gain.
You shift the fatty, sugary foods to the category of occasional foods but never
deprive yourself. You learn how to pay attention to your “I’m satisfied” body
signals. Once activated, you stop eating much earlier with less food. You
support your weight loss by burning off those layers of fat with exercise that
makes you feel good inside and out.
You also address emotional eating and begin to separate emotional hunger from
physical hunger. If you get off track for a day or so, you can easily get back
on track so that you do not put the weight back on.
Hypnosis supports general weight loss as well as helping those with obesity,
which is a common problem in our society and stems from old family programming
around food, years and years of food commercials and low self esteem. Gastro
bypass or lap band surgery is the current rage and it works! However the
struggle can still be there because the emotional issues remain when the
willpower and newness of the procedures wear off. Even after surgery, there is
still hard work to do. Old habits to change, and emotions to deal with.
Hypnosis makes this life changing event easier and more tolerable and allows you
to become comfortable with your “new image”.

Can You Still Cure Saggy Skin?
As you get older, your skin loses its ability to retain its
natural structure. It loses its resilient nature because of
the decline of collagen and elastin. This is actually a
natural process our integumentary system has to go through.
But don’t say goodbye to your elastic skin yet. Although you
cannot full put an end to the aging process of your skin, you
can still do something to bring back a semblance of its past
resilient structure. Let me tell you a few “cures” to saggy
skin condition:
1. Encourage the healthy regeneration of collagen and
elastin in the body.
One of the mistakes people make when improving collagen and
elastin production is that they go for synthetic
alternatives. Using synthetic collagen-based products will
not really produce the results you have been looking for.
Collagen and elastin have a complex structure. They cannot
be duplicated easily.
You should look for treatments that can internally produce
collagen and elastin. Look for a product that contains
CynergyTK and Phytessence Wakame. CynergyTK is an ingredient
that has been extracted from the wool of sheep. This is a
great source of protein called Keratin. Keratin is actually
the key to internal collagen production. It is responsible
for boosting the amount of complex proteins in the
integumentary system.
Phytessence Wakame, on the other hand, makes sure that your
skin retains healthy levels of complex proteins. This sea
kelp can get rid of the harmful enzymes that attack
hyaluronic acid. This acid is responsible for the
lubrication of collagen and elastin.
2. Increase your intake of fresh water fishes, roasted nuts
and green leafy vegetables.
Fresh water fishes are ideal sources of proteins and amino
acids. You need to augment missing nutrients in your system
in order for the skin to regenerate more complex proteins.
Fresh water fishes also contain omega-3 fatty acids. These
fatty acids can help prevent cellular inflammation. Cells in
your skin can perform better in normalizing dermis functions.
Roasted nuts and green leafy vegetables contain a hefty
amount of copper. This trace mineral is also found in our
system. It is needed to produce copper peptides. Peptides
help improve the regeneration of elastin and collagen
proteins.
3. Drink Vitamin C supplements daily
You can still cure saggy skin if you include this vitamin in
your daily regimen. This vitamin encourages the production of
collagen and elastin. Moreover, it minimizes the effects of
ultraviolet rays in your dermis so you are not vulnerable to
the damaging effects of the sun.
Why don’t you try these tips and find out if they will work
in bringing back your elastic skin structure? There is no
harm in trying natural remedies.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its
terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in
France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by
a recent fire that destroyed France ‘s white flag factory, effectively
paralysing the country’s military capability.
Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly”
to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain:
“Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”
The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful
Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also
have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.”
Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only
threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .
The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to
deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new
Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.
Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries”
to “She’ll be all-right, Mate.” Three more escalation levels remain:
“Crikey,!” “I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend” and
“The barbie is cancelled.” So far no situation has ever warranted use
of the final escalation level.
The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist
threats and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed”
to “Peeved.”
Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated”
or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since
the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have
been re-categorized from “Tiresome ” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last
time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588,
when threatened by the Spanish Armada.
The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s
get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the
reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for
the last 300 years.

John Oliver was the first recorded licensee in 1804 and at that time was popularised by men building the new railway and digging the new cut of the River Arun.
About the pub
Later it became a fashionable watering hole for the Edwardians; even today it still has the outward appearance of an elegant riverside summerhouse. The one long bar has a boarded floor, a warm fire in one end wall and a games area the other. A small adjoining room doubles as a family room. What were once probably the old boat sheds is now the ‘Boathouse’ restaurant. Seating is provided outside under the veranda and picnic benches are positioned on the terrace beside the river with boat trips available in summer.
A very good and imaginative food menu is available seven days a week with a roast on Sunday. Starters, available as ‘lite bites’ if preferred, include filled jacket potatoes, home made soup, potato skins, garlic mushrooms, Cajun chicken and asparagus with main courses such as vegetable stir fry, gammon steak and a pie of the day. Other dishes include scrumpy pork, cannelloni verdi, rack of ribs Highland smokies, Cajun swordfish, a mixed grill and Hawaiian chicken.
Families are welcome as are dogs.
Time at the Bar
Weekday opening times are from 11 a.m. till 11 p.m. Sunday 12 noon till 10.30 p.m. with food served between 12 noon and 10.30 p.m. Telephone: (01903) 882828
Enter Arundel from the A27 and take the road to the castle entrance. The inn is further along the road just past the wildfowl reserve.
There is plenty of parking both in the inn’s own large car park, in the lane at the front or on open ground just before reaching the pub.
The Walk
Approx. distance of walk: 5.25 miles. OS Map No.197 TQ 025/085
Arundel is an historic town its two major attractions being Arundel Castle and The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust. This lovely and interesting walk is ideal for the whole family. At first it follows the course of the Arun River along a raised bank to the small hamlet of South Stoke. From there it takes you through woods then steeply up onto the downs before descending past Swanbourne Lake and back to the pub between the river and the wildfowl reserve.
The Black Rabbit Walking Map
Road Road Bridge Bridge
Track Track Gate Gate

Walk down across the car park to pick up the footpath in the corner. A narrow path through the trees leads to a stile which allows access to the river path. The raised bank was built to ensure livestock would not be marooned during times of flooding . Wild flowers abound along both river banks in particular large clumps of marsh marigolds. Follow the path across a track by the bridge, through a couple of gates turning left when you reach the hamlet of South Stoke.
South Stoke is recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1085-86. St Leonard’s Church dates from the 11th century and the first cottage No.38 was once an inn. Walk on round and after passing South Stoke farm turn right onto the bridlew3ay. Make a left urn left at the barn and keep to the edge of the field crossing the stile at the bottom into the field and bear right. Keeping close to the fence, walk round then over the stile entering woods on the far side.
There are plenty of primroses and vast swathes of ramsons. If you like the smell of garlic then walk in the spring, it is delightful. The path follows close to a wall on the left. When you reach a signed gap go through and follow the path, over a stile and up the hill bearing right at the track and then left. It is a fairly steep climb to the stile at the top. Go over and bear right towards the corner of the small wood following the track round until a path sign direct you off to the right. Follow a line fairly close to the fence, over a wooden crossing point, join the track at the bottom and turn left.
Keep to the track along the valley unless of course you want to walk through Arundel in which case continue ahead up the track towards the tower. Arriving at the lake you have two route options, the left path is perhaps the better. |Having reached the road walk straight across through to the little path beside the reserve and turn right. Bear left at the bridge then simply follow the path round the reserve then along the river bank back to the pub.

If you run out of puff, try drinking some beetroot juice. It can help you enjoy a more active life, especially if you are suffering from a heart or lung problem.
Research earlier this year showed that the juice extended exercise time among athletes by 16 per cent – but the same researchers have discovered that the elderly or those with a health problem can enjoy similar benefits.
In a new study, researchers at the University of Exeter discovered that the juice helped people use less oxygen when walking, reducing the effort by 12 per cent.
The juice widens the blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and allows more blood to flow, and also reduces the amount of oxygen needed by muscles.

The over-the-counter herbal treatment, Echinacea, can reduce the duration of the common cold – but only by half a day.
It’s the average benefit among people who have the early stages of a cold – so, for some, it could have a stronger effect.
It’s been tested on a group of 700 people aged from 12 to 80 years, all of whom had early symptoms of a cold. They were split into three groups: no treatment, Echinacea, or Echinacea or placebo. The latter group was not told which they had been given.
Overall, say researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, the supplement had a 10 per cent positive impact on the duration of a cold, which usually lasts around five days.
There were no side effects, and so Echinacea is doing more good than harm, they say.

Popular indigestion pills such as Zantac and Losec have this week been pinpointed as a major cause of pneumonia, a disease that can be a killer in the elderly.
Acid suppressive drugs, as they’re known, are given to up to 70 per cent of elderly patients in hospital, and they are likely to be a major cause of pneumonia-related deaths, say researchers from Seoul National University Hospital in Korea.
The drugs increase the risk of respiratory tract infections and pneumonia, especially in close communities such as care homes and hospitals. The researchers reckon the drugs are responsible for one out of every 200 cases of pneumonia acquired in hospital.
However, young and old are equally susceptible, and everyone who takes the drugs increases their chances of developing pneumonia.
The drugs include proton pump inhibitors – such as Losec, Prilosec and Prevacid – and histamine2 receptor antagonists, including Zantac and Cimetidine. Indigestion drugs are the second leading medication in the world, with sales of around $26bn every year.

The radiation from CT scans is so great that children who have them run a far higher risk of developing cancer for the remainder of their life.Researchers reckon the risk remains high for 58 years after having the scan, but they admit it could be for longer.Around 1 million CT scans are performed on children aged five years or younger every year in the US, often for diagnosing cancer. But the scans emit ionizing radiation, a known carcinogen. To see if the scans did cause cancer, researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Centre tracked 1,303 people who, as small children, had CT scans between 1953 and 1987. None of the children had cancer, but had the scan to check for an enlarged thymus that, at the time, was believed to be a health problem.Over the years, and up to 2008, 50 of the group developed thyroid cancer compared with just 13 of their siblings who had not been scanned.Source: Radiation Research, 2010; 174: 753-62.

It’s enough that we have to worry about the chemicals they put into our food – but the wrappers could be every bit as deadly. Food wrappers are coated with non-stick and greaseproof agents – and now researchers have discovered they also contain dangerously high levels of fire retardant, which gets into the food.
The wrappers on one out of 10 samples of butter contained very high levels of the flame retardant compound, PBDE, which had made its way into the product. One sample had 135 times higher levels of PBDE, and 900 times the level of PBDE’s main component, deca-BDE, than the others.
PBDEs have also been detected in other high-fat foods, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products.
The fire retardant is commonly found in electronics, textiles, wire and cable insulation, and automobile and airplane components.
Although the EU banned all uses of deca-BDE in 2008, and US authorities plan to follow suit by 2014, researchers from the University of Texas School of Public Health say chemicals are in the environment, and can continue to be in components and stock for years after a ban has been imposed.

Thalidomide is back, and this time it’s going to help you live longer. From being the world’s most feared drug – and which launched an industry of tighter regulation and safety controls – it is this week being heralded as a ‘fountain of youth’.
Revlimia (lenalidomide), a cancer drug that is a derivative of thalidomide, could restore key elements of the immune system that are associated with ill health as we age, say researchers from the University of California at San Francisco, led by allergist Edward Goetzl. “If you could take a low-dosage pill with no side effects, wouldn’t you do it?” Goetzl asks.
Possibly so, but Revlimia doesn’t fit the description. Designed to treat multiple myeloma, its availability is restricted in the UK, while the US’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has included it in its list of 20 drugs under investigation for potential safety problems. As a derivative of thalidomide, pregnant women must never take it as it interferes with the growth of the fetus. Other side effects include thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, both fatal conditions, hepatotoxicity – liver damage – and bone marrow toxicity.
Aside from those, it has no side effects.

Your diet could be one of the most important factors in determining whether you suffer from anxiety, autism and nervous and behavioural problems. The food you eat reverses some of the worst symptoms, and researchers have discovered this week that it can also be a key trigger.A diet that is high in sugar can cause abnormal behaviour such as hair-pulling, say researchers. The condition – trichotillomania – affects up to 4 per cent of the population, and happens more in women than men. The researchers, from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, think the diet could also cause other behavioural problems, such as autism, Tourette’s and skin picking.Source: Nutritional Neuroscience, 2010; 13: 256.

Aspartame – the artificial sweetener found in more than 6,000 foods and dietary drinks – causes cancer.

Everyone knows that HRT for the menopause cause breast and ovarian cancers and heart problems – everyone that is except the doctors, who continue to prescribe the drugs at dangerously high doses.
Although the first major health alert about HRT was issued as long ago as 2001, and has been followed up since by studies that demonstrate other health risks, doctors have ignored the findings, say researchers from Stanford University.
Doctors weren’t even reverting to low-dose formulations, which offer many of the benefits but dramatically reduce the risks.
“It takes a huge event to change clinical practice, “said research team head Randall Stafford.

Jet lag after a long-haul flight can affect us far longer than the first few days after we arrive – it can last for a whole month, researchers say.
Memory and learning problems can last for four weeks where the time difference is greater than five hours. This is not only significant for passengers on long-haul flights, it raises serious health concerns for crew, such as pilots and cabin staff, who could be regularly flying long-distance.
Researchers from the University of California at Berkeley say it could also have an unforeseen impact on the efficiency of workers in key professions such as medical staff.

It’s one of the greatest medical myths – that getting old is the cause of a range of illnesses, from dementia, arthritis, heart problems and the rest. In fact, age has nothing to do with it, researchers have discovered.
Older people who remain fit and well through good diet and exercise can expect to live longer than people 15 years younger – and they can remain sharper and fitter, too.
And it’s never too late to get into shape. Researchers found that a quarter of marathon and long-distance athletes aged up to 69 years had started running only five years previously, and they were already enjoying the benefits of exercise.
In a separate study, ‘senior moments’ of sudden memory loss and dementia have nothing to do with growing old, say researchers from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Instead, dementia and memory loss are a sign of brain disease, and are not just one of those things that happen to us because we are old. The researchers based their findings on an on-going study of 350 Catholic nuns and priests who have been given memory tests every year for the past 13 years.

Parents worried about giving their children the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine can do one simple thing instead: just give them plenty of vitamin A.
Although the vitamin can’t stop children catching measles, it protects them against its worst effects.
Measles is often classified as a killer – usually by health agencies trying to scare parents into vaccinating their children – but it is a relatively benign disease in those who are not deficient in the vitamin.
Researchers at the Cochrane Institute, who studied 43 trials involving 215,633 children, discovered that vitamin A is a life-saver, as it prevents deaths in children who catch measles and suffer from diarrhea, which, on its own, is a major killer in developing countries.
Even giving the standard recommended dose of vitamin A reduced the risk of death by 24 per cent, the Cochrane researchers found, which equates to saving the lives of around 1 million children every year.

The Oxford University professor who made the headlines this week with his aspirin study – which demonstrated that the painkiller reduces the risk of cancer by 20 per cent – wasn’t telling the whole story. Just three years ago he discovered the drug was a major cause of stroke in the elderly.
His earlier findings may be the reason why Prof Peter Rothwell, at Oxford’s Department of Clinical Neurology, wasn’t as emphatic about taking aspirin as his cancer study warranted.
After announcing the findings, he cautioned: “I don’t think it’s necessarily right for the person who did the research to say what guidelines should be. We can’t say with absolute certainty that there won’t be some unknown harm in taking aspirin for 30 years…people have to accept there’s some uncertainty here.”
But there isn’t really any uncertainty. Prof Rothwell has already demonstrated that aspirin has caused a sevenfold increase in stroke over the past 25 years among elderly patients. At the time, he warned that aspirin could soon replace high blood pressure (hypertension) as the leading cause of stroke, especially among the over-75s.
He might also have had in mind a study from Eastern Virginia Medical School which discovered the drug is killing 20,000 Americans a year from gastro-intestinal bleeding – when the official records put the figure at just 59.

The charity card shop is in its last week of trading and is trying to reach and exceed last year’s sales by 18 December 2010, when the doors will close for the year. With 75% of all proceeds going to local and national charities involved, Cards for Good Causes is a fantastic place to purchase Christmas cards. Inside the store there is the chance to win some fantastic prizes in the free raffle. The students have managed to secure fabulous prizes, including donations from; Harvey’s Best Bitter polypin keg voucher, Coffee Republic (Brighton) lunch voucher, an authentic and autographed sketch of Harry and his Bucket Full of Dinosaurs by director Graham Ralph, two tickets to the Cinderella Pantomime (Eastbourne) and more.
Promoting the store are Clare Pascoe-Price, Vanessa Whiteside, Charlotte Barrett, Lauren Fry and Vicky Cooper who are final year retail marketing students at the University of Brighton. They are volunteering for Cards for Good Causes and responsible for all aspects of marketing for the shop as an integral part of their module studies. They also have implemented online marketing to raise awareness for the cause and shop.
Ends.

The health benefits of pomegranate juice just get better and better. The juice lowers cholesterol levels and blood pressure, and researchers have discovered this week that it can help kidney patients on dialysis combat infections and heart problems.
The researchers, from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, tested it on a group of 101 dialysis patients, who were given the juice or a placebo drink three times a week for a year.
The pomegranate juice group suffered fewer inflammatory problems, and they were less likely to need hospital care for infections.
The juice is a powerful antioxidant and infection-fighter, say the researchers.

Unconcerned by parents’ worries about overloading their children with too many vaccines, the UK’s health authorities are introducing a new ‘super shot’ which will be a six-in-one jab, including the controversial MMR.
The child will be given three separate injections in one surgery visit, which will purportedly offer protection against measles, mumps and rubella (the MMR shot), two forms of meningitis and PCV13, an infection that can cause pneumonia.
The new shot is expected to be introduced before the end of the year, although doctors have been told to use the new super-shot only on children aged one year or older.
The UK’s health agencies are confident the new super-shot will be well received by parents, and should increase the take-up of childhood vaccinations, a rate that fell dramatically after concerns that the MMR vaccine could cause autism.
However, nobody yet knows how the six vaccines will inter-react with each other, or how an immature immune system can cope.

Added sugars in processed foods and cola drinks could be one of the primary causes of today’s epidemic of ‘lifestyle diseases’, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity – and doctors don’t realise it.
Researchers at the University of Colorado, who have carried out an analysis of health effects of fructose in our food, say doctors do not suspect it could be one of the primary causes of a range of health conditions, collectively known as metabolic syndrome.
Not only are they causing hypertension, diabetes and obesity, they are also responsible for chronic kidney disease (CKD).
HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) is one of the most common forms of dietary fructose, and is found in almost every type of processed food, from breakfast cereals, biscuits, cakes, and cola drinks.

If you’ve developed a dry, itchy patch on the side of your face, your mobile (cell) phone is probably causing it.
The phone contains nickel, a common allergen, and prolonged use can cause an allergic skin reaction, say allergists. “Patients come in with dry, itchy patch on their cheeks, jaw lines and ears and have no idea what is causing their allergic reaction, “says allergist Luz Fonacier.
Nickel affects 17 per cent of women and 3 per cent of men, and is also found in keys, coins and paper clips.
Nickel allergy symptoms include redness, swelling, itching, eczema, skin lesions and sometimes oozing and scarring.

Eating fruits and vegetables – or taking vitamin A, C and E supplements – is the single most important thing to do if you want to live longer.
The key to a long life is down to the levels of the antioxidant alpha-carotene you have in your blood – and you get that from certain fruits and vegetables, or from vitamin supplements.
Researchers from the US’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have discovered that high levels of alpha-carotene mean you are 40 per cent more likely to be around in 14 years time compared to someone with low or zero levels, and it protects you against heart disease and cancer.
They tracked the lives of 15,318 adults aged from 20 years from 1988 to 2006. During that time, 3,810 participants died, and the single most important factor was serum (blood) levels of alpha-carotene, after taking into account demographics, lifestyles and health risks. Those with the highest levels improved their chances of being alive over the study period by 40 per cent.
Vegetables rich in alpha-carotene are the ‘yellow-orange’ varieties – carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkin squashes – and the ‘dark greens’ – broccoli, green beans, green peas, spinach, turnips and leaf vegetables, such as cabbage.
